"Get there, don't get there.  It doesn't matter.  What matters is following my own path and letting that path unfold moment by moment, step by step"  - 'Roo" Giordano

Name:  Deane “Roo” Giordano

Where do you live:  Asheville, NC

What is the title of your session?
I will be doing two!

Intentional Hiking:  A Practical Guide to Modern Pilgrimage through Long Distance Hiking, and

Yoga For Hikers- a stretching and yoga class where I share how to use the items in your pack to keep you limber and flexible for your hike....bandanna, sleeping bag in stuff sack, etc.

What is your favorite part about being outdoors?

The best part of being outdoors is that when I’m outside, moving through sun-dappled woods or climbing mountains or just getting lost in watching the way a stream tumbles over rocks, I get to completely forget any earthly cares I might be struggling with or any problems I may need to solve.  But the amazing thing is that when I lose myself like this, I almost always spontaneously find answers to my questions and solutions to my problems.  Being outdoors, especially hiking, lets answers come in sideways and gives me fresh perspectives on old issues.

Do you have a favorite hike or adventure?

Wow, there are too many to name, but Franconia Ridge via the Falling Waters trail in New Hampshire is one we hike frequently and that always surprises me with how beautiful and hard it is.  Another is one I hope to repeat on day…The Enchantments in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness area in Washington State—truly remote, otherworldly and teeming with mountain goats.

What is your never-leave-home-without piece of gear?

A small set of watercolors and a sketchbook.

What encouragement would you give to a woman that is new to the outdoors or nervous about getting out there?

Every time I get back on the trail I’m a little nervous.  Here’s what I’ve learned about fear, though.  That every time I walk into and through it, my capacity to face the next scary thing expands.  In that way, my world expands and I get closer to living the life my soul really craves.  There truly is nothing to lose by facing our fears.

Any other thoughts?
RE:  fear.  “Fear is just excitement without the breath.”  -Fritz Perls.  So breathe and dive in.
