Name
: Karen Lord Rutter

Trail Name: Super Mom

Where do you live: Snellville, Georgia

What is the title of your session?

Session 1: “How a Homeless Golden Retriever Turned Me Into A Hiker And An Author”.
Session 2: “Taking the A.T. Into The Classroom”.

What is your favorite part about being outdoors?

The smells, the beauty, the trees, the flowers, the feeling of being one with nature, the sun shining warm upon my face, listening to the sound of falling rain, hearing the birds sing, coming face to face with wildlife (bears, elk, moose), sleeping in the woods, listening to the sounds of the night, and feeling free yet humbled.

Do you have a favorite hike or adventure?

My favorite hike is in Rocky Mountain National Park. It starts at the Bear Lake Trail head and goes past Nymph Lake, Dream Lake, and on to Emerald Lake.  It is particularly beautiful in the fall. I wanted to stop every few feet to absorb the grandeur.

My favorite adventure was taking a trip to Iceland on a whim and camping and hiking with my son as we traveled the circumference of the country.

What is your never-leave-home-without piece of gear?

My ENO hammock.  One of my favorite memories in my hammock is when I fell asleep in Grayson Highlands and woke up surrounded by the ponies!

What encouragement would you give to a woman who is new to the outdoors or nervous about getting out there?

Just do it!  When my son asked me to do an 8 mile hike in the Shenandoahs, I said, "I can't do that!" But, I did. In Maine, I was petrified to cross the log bridges, but I did. I went to Iceland because I accidentally came upon a good price on a flight.  So, I packed my bags, camped in the wild, hiked to waterfalls at midnight, and enjoyed the unexpected adventure. You get one life, enjoy it to the fullest!  Don't put off your dreams until tomorrow. You'll never regret giving yourself permission to live your dreams.

And what will YOU be bringing to the Summit that no one else will be??
My book!  I am delighted to be sharing and  signing my book, Northbounders: 2,186 Miles of Friendship.  The book is based on the true story of our 10-year old Golden Retriever, Copper, who thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2013.  Copper tells the incredible and improbable story as he hikes from Georgia to Maine with his best friend. The book is filled with history, geography, maps, and trail lingo. It is factual, yet fun, as Copper uses his wry sense of humor to get through the toughest of days. If you've ever wanted to thru-hike or learn more about the trail, Copper can tell you the perils and obstacles as well as the joys and traditions in all 14 states!
The story won 2nd place in the 2018 MY A.TStory Contest which was sponsored by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.
