"When you open the door to help others overcome barriers, you too are impacted by their growth and accomplishments." -Can Can
Name: Jody "Can Can" Koonce
Where do you live: Charlotte, NC
What is your favorite part about being outdoors?
Your senses open up to new sounds, smells, views/vistas, animals and that you can only see when you opt to meander outdoors, into the woods. We often talk about how the greatest sites/views/vistas require two legs to travel too instead of four wheels.
Do you have a favorite hike or adventure? Anything in the Great Smoky Mountain State National Park, but my favorite backpack is into backcountry site #40.
My favorite adventure is anywhere in the National Forests across the United States. In 2017, I had an opportunity to visit 7 different National Forests and it's amazing what our forefathers had the for thought to preserve.
What is your never-leave-home-without piece of gear?
Water purification system. I have been on the trail several times when other day hikers have ran out of water. It’s pretty cool to help others along the trail when it comes to making sure their H20 needs are met.
What encouragement would you give to a woman that is new to the outdoors or nervous about getting out there?
Get out there and try things out, constantly challenge yourself to stretch mentally, physically and emotionally. You will always have a naysayer in the crowd as to why you can’t or shouldn’t do something, but when you rise above the noise, you will develop a strong Sense of accomplishment and stronger mental agility. You inspire others without evening knowing it, just by being who you are and what you do. When you open the door to help others overcome barriers, you too are impacted by their growth and accomplishments. Get out there an make an impact in others, by bringing another hiking friend along with you and showing them the way.
Any other thoughts?
Plan, prepare, practice, perform..you can accomplish anything you put your mind too!!
