A34 Milton Interchange Improvement Scheme

16 October 2015

TRAFFIC management arrangements on the A34 at Milton will change on 28 October as work moves to the next stage, which is to construct the last section of the new bridge.
From that date traffic travelling southbound will be able to use two lanes on the A34 – northbound traffic will have the option to use one lane on the A34 or continue their journey via the slip road down to the roundabout to rejoin the A34. Vehicles more than 2.5m wide will need to use this route.
The new arrangement, which is shown on the map below, will be clearly signed.
Progress so far
Work to build the bridge under the A34 is progressing and we recently removed the temporary sheet piles in the middle of the bridge deck to enable the permanent concrete piles to be installed. The bridge abutment have been constructed allowing the new bridge beams to be installed. The new concrete deck was poured in early October and the waterproofing of the deck will take place next week (weather permitting).

Temporary diversions during overnight work
The next stage of temporary sheet pile installation and extraction is planned for 23 and 24 October, overnight. We will be closing both sides of the A34 during this time. Southbound traffic will be diverted off at Milton, round the roundabout and back on at the other side.

Northbound traffic will be diverted off at Chilton Interchange, through Rowstock and back on at Milton Interchange. The installation of the sheet piles may be disruptive unfortunately, since it is a loud operation. In November we will be installing the final 67 permanent piles in order to construct the bridge deck on the Steventon side of the roundabout.
The A34 will also be closed overnight on 26 and 27 October in order to resurface the newly constructed bridge deck. The diversion will be the same as above.
We will also be  extending the cycleway from Milton Park Road round onto the A4130. Resurfacing on Steventon Road is complete however lanes 1 and 2 will remain closed for safety reasons while we complete the scheme, because the number of lanes on the roundabout remain restricted.
Milton services open as usual

While the work continues the local businesses on the A4130 at Milton services, McDonalds, BP Connect, Premier Inn, the Applecart Restaurant, Costa Coffee and Ridgeway Volkswagen all remain open as usual.
