Rheumatology Researchers – Grayer and Grayer

     I’ve been doing lupus research for about 40 years and feel like I’m entitled to some opinions and observations. Now, it’s customary for researchers to complain to whoever will listen that there’s not enough grant funding, and indeed there is never enough money and it’s tougher than ever to keep a research program funded.  But there is another, more serious problem I am not sure that the public – or the Rheumatology community in general – is aware of. Rheumatology research and research in most internal medicine specialties – is becoming a geriatric endeavor.
 
     Don’t get me wrong. Lupus research, and Rheumatology research in general, is thriving in the US and abroad. There is an exceptional group of mightily talented, imaginative, and hardworking souls who are moving the field forward in exciting ways, drawing from major insights in cell biology, immunology, and molecular biology. But, with a few notable exceptions, most of the leaders in the field are over 60.
