Artist Lisa Schroeder
We talked with Lisa Schroeder, half of the guitar and flute combo called the Noteworthy Duo, to find out about the reactions to their Midwest tour and her upcoming NFA performances.
So far, you’ve spent your summer touring through the Midwest, what has stood out the most about this experience?
The best part about touring is meeting the people who attend the concerts. It fascinates me that there are some people in the audience who may have never heard a flute up close, instead of hidden in an orchestra or concert band. It is always fun to hear their reaction of "I had no idea a flute could sound like that!"
How does playing an Altus benefit your performances in the Noteworthy duo?
Since I play extensively with a guitarist, I need a flute that has many different tone colours. The Altus has a very large colour palate in which to draw from. Whether I want to lightly blend into the sounds of the guitar, or bring the flute out into the forefront with a rich, lush tone, all can be accomplished. When it comes to intonation, I find the entire scale of the Altus flute to be consistent. The guitar can be a finicky instrument when it comes to intonation; the Altus allows me to adjust in an instant if needed.

What are your thoughts on the upcoming activity at the NFA? Is there something you’re eager about?
I am really looking forward to this year's NFA convention in New York City. It's the most cutting edge and diverse convention we've had thus far. Honoring the living legend Sir James Galway is going to be a momentus occasion! He alone has inspired so many people, including myself, with his talent, charm, and conviction towards his approach to music.
Also, I am particularly thrilled to play for the Newly Published Music Concert. As a huge supporter of new music, I am very honored to have been chosen to play an exciting two movement piece by Katherine Hoover called "Two for Two." The first movement begins with rapid flourishes on the alto, showing off its fast dexterity and addictive tone! The second movement showcases the bass flute's beautiful sultry sound and expressive bravera.
I'm also playing bass flute with the Professional Flute Choir at the convention. This year's repertoire features a piece by flutist Robert Aitken which is going to be spectacular!
What’s next after NFA, and your Southwest Tour?
Noteworthy Duo is continuing to book concerts across the United States promoting our first CD of all Latin American music, "Between Flute & Guitar". We are going into the studio later this year to begin the recording of our next project which will include music of living composers from North & South America.
Altus Flutes & Azumi Flutes have taken to the digital age. Join our online community on Facebook or follow us on Twitter @AltusFlutes. We'll start Tweeting about our artists and upcoming NFA events following the Independence Day weekend, we hope you'll take a look. We're seeking ways to engage with Altus and Azumi players, so post photos of a recital or share other links that enrich your flute playing. Many of our artists regularly post to the Altus Fan page. We look forward to meeting you!
