Dear Members,

As promised, we are writing today to announce our decision about the future of the IA Institute.

Before we get there, we would like to thank you. The support we have received over the last 17 years has enabled the Institute to further initiatives to grow awareness of information architecture around the world. Much progress has been made.

All responses to our survey were thoughtfully considered. While there is a strong interest in saving the Institute, the resources that will be needed to do so are not abundant. The majority of responses to our survey favored that we either dissolve, reinvent, or merge with a related group.

Our decision is to dissolve the IA Institute. Our plan addresses most of the concerns raised. We will not reinvent the IA Institute, however we will ensure World IA Day and the IA Conference have the support needed to continue to thrive.

It is important to reaffirm, litigation is not the absolute cause of our decision. To blame our situation on a single reason or person would just not be accurate. There are many reasons we are faced with our decision today; the IA Institute has been struggling for a long time.

Despite our struggles, the Institute has meant a great deal to each person on our board today and has been a worthwhile volunteer effort. Although the time has come to let go of our professional board of trade, we greatly valued its existence.

While we acknowledge this is a solemn moment for the history of our profession, it is also an opportunity for positive change. It is a space now open, where new possibilities are free to flourish.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve you.

IA Institute Board of Directors

Next Steps

If you have additional questions that are not covered below, please email them to president@iainstitute.org. We will do our best to respond in a timely fashion.

Refund membership dues
Members who gave money after August 11, 2019, when the board first agreed that the possibility of dissolution may exist, may reach out to treasury@iainstitute.org for a refund until October 5, 2019. We will offer a refund for the amount received, which does not include any fees incurred.

Donate assets
World IA Day will become a non-profit charitable organization so that it can continue independently of the IA Institute. In accordance with our bylaws, all assets will be transferred to World IA Day. We will be seeking volunteers for this effort and will be in touch with those who expressed a desire to help.

IA Conference
We will continue to work with Kunverj, our event planning partner, to transition related IA Conference assets. Kunverj will provide insurance for the conference and its volunteers and will continue to work with both current
and future Chairs to ensure this conference remains a community-led event.

All active members from August 2018 - September 2019 will be eligible for a discount to IAC20 in New Orleans.

Journal of IA
This initiative was started in 2009 and has been dormant since 2013. There are a group of volunteers working to revive the journal. Related assets will be distributed to this team.

Use of IA Institute social and digital properties.
We will determine, based on the feedback given, how best to use the IA Institute’s online properties. We will modify the content on our website to communicate our decision to dissolve in the upcoming weeks.
