News Brief—August 2021

I love this post-it-note inspirational quote from podcaster Brené Brown. I think it perfectly describes the past 18 months we’ve all had. I recently shared with our board my mantra as we emerge from our pandemic pods: Keep It Simple Sisters (K-I-S-S). Let’s take this post-pandemic (or Delta variant?) year in small bites, like a Hershey’s Kiss. Here’s how:

  • Free up time for small groups. Reduce number of programs;

  • Simplify scholarship fundraising. Remove “ticket handling” burden;

  • Reduce frequency of newsletters. Add a dash of news briefs.

We've got some sweet branch programs planned: two in the fall and two in the spring. I encourage you to join the book club or social justice interest group or create a new interest group with a smile on your (unmasked - we had hoped) face and a K-I-S-S on your lips.

Cindy Parks, President

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT:

Lori Bunton serves on our program committee. She also serves as Co-President of the ERA-NC Alliance. Members of ERA-NC Alliance including several members of various AAUW-NC branches converged outside the Department of Justice to protest Attorney General Merrick Garland’s failure to rescind the Office of Legal Counsel’s 2020 opinion instructing the National Archivist to refrain from publishing the ERA as the 28th Amendment. Lori reports: “Alliance members waved their signs at the tinted windows of various SUVs and limos … including Merrick Garland’s black-tinted SUV.” Activists from Minnesota, Maryland and New Jersey were also present. Equal Means Equal organized this summer’s 2021 ERA Sentinel Project. Lori says, “We learned from an employee in the DOJ that the protest was attracting a lot of attention inside the DOJ.” Thank you, Lori!

Birthday Dollars Fund Local Scholarships

Do we have any August birthdays? Treasurer Mary Sipple has a September birthday. Show her some love! Mary serves not only as Treasurer, but also as newsletter volunteer (and she works a full-time job). Join me in thanking her with a personal note or a birthday card and a check to AAUW-ODC, PO Box 9303, Chapel Hill, NC 27515. Write “Birthday Dollars/September” in the memo line. Yes, Mary picks up the mail, too! It’s just that simple for our branch to celebrate and raise LOCAL scholarship money! Enter YOUR birth month here so that we may raise a buck in your honor! We will report periodically how much scholarship money we’ve raised in each birthday month.

Fourth Financial Aid Scholarship Considered

The board will consider adding a Fourth local scholarship ($1000/yr.) in Chatham County at Central Carolina Community College. We currently fund UNC ($1500/yr.), NCCU ($1500/yr.), and Durham Technical Community College ($1000/yr.). Donate directly to any of these institutions from our AAUW-ODC Scholarship webpage. Invite family and friends to donate in honor of your birthday. Make your own donation in honor or memory of someone special in your life and send a card. Isn’t that better than selling event tickets?
