Dear Friends,

On Monday 9 July, 25 keen young artists participating in the Imbali Visual Literacy Project (VLP) in Kylemore were treated to a wonderful art experience.

Courtesy of the Stellenbosch Arts Association, they were invited to visit the Rupert Art Museum where Robyn-Leigh Cedras, director of the Museum, took them on a walkabout, and where Nelis Koegelenberg, principal of the PJ Olivier Art Centre, helped them to discover the magic of Pierneef and the wonderful imaginary world of Walter Battiss.
Initially overawed by the impressive architecture and being surrounded by great works of art, the children were soon captivated by Nelis’ enthusiasm! He made them work on colouring in a blank copy of a Pierneef art piece in groups of two. In the hall housing the works of Walter Battiss, while sprawled on the floor, one partner would draw the outlines of a Battiss art piece and the other would colour and improvise on a sketch of the original work.

As a reward for their good work and excellent behaviour, Imbali’s budding artists were treated to a special meal at Hudson’s Hamburger Joint in Dorp Street. Wolfing down enormous milkshakes and three substantial hamburgers each, they were over the moon with delight!
A wonderful day was had by all and many thanks go to Hettie de Klerk of the Stellenbosch Arts Association for sponsoring the Rupert Art Museum experience, Robyn-Leigh Cedras for her kind hospitality, Nelis Koegelenberg for his special way of inspiring young artists, Alexis Hanslo and Theo van der Merwe, our dedicated VLP art teachers for their assistance during the art class, Antionette for the early morning sandwiches and juices and Eva and Jeanette for accompanying the children on the bus. And of course Jeanne Bestbier-Bloch for her magnificent support of the Imbali Visual Literacy Project and her relentless drive to put the wonderful outing together!
