President's Message - David Bainbridge

With 2017 off to a flying start, we have already started to define our   plans for  the new year, including a comprehensive events program. In particular, we are looking forward to the newly rebranded Rail Industry Field Day event, in partnership with Sydney Trains.

As always, we expect this to be the biggest and best to date, however with our new expanded and inclusive focus on all of rail, we have no doubt this will be the case.

In anticipation, we hope that the weather is kind and more people from the rail community, as well as others who want to know what the industry can offer, come to Clyde. Everyone will have the opportunity to experience first-hand what it means to be part of our thriving community.

I would like to give a special thanks to our partners, Sydney Trains, for their support. We could not deliver such an event without their generosity. Thanks also to our corporate sponsors, who help make this event possible.

This year will see the RTAA continue to deliver on our key priorities, which interestingly, remain the key challenges that our industry faces. They include
  • DIVERSITY: broadening the appeal of rail for women, young people and Indigenous people
  • NATIONAL: being a truly national organisation
  • STANDARDS: participating in the establishment of uniform track standards
  • KNOWLEDGE: promoting grassroots knowledge sharing from one generation to the next.
A full review of our strategic plan will take place this year including key priorities and actions to be delivered over the next three years. This will be completed prior to the AGM, held at the end of the year, and will set the RTAA on its course to support the rail industry, our members and our industry partners.

Eur. Ing. David Bainbridge

NAIDOC WEEK - 2-9 JULY
Our Language Matters

The RTAA is looking for new opportunities to support NAIDOC Week, held 2-9 July 2017. The RTAA is interested in hearing from rail organisations, Indigenous communities and Indigenous organisations for ways in which we can partner to support this important week-long celebration.

Supporting the promotion of careers to Indigenous people is part of one of our key strategies that focuses on the creation of diverse, inclusive and sustainable rail workforces. Working with Indigenous communities is a key strategy to support this objective.

RTAA’S 2017 AUSTRALASIAN RAIL DIVERSITY AWARDS ARE NOW OPEN

WHO WILL BE THE WINNER IN 2017?
The RTAA is proud to recognise the outstanding achievements of members in the promotion of diversity and workplace inclusion in rail through the establishment of the Australasian Rail Diversity Award.

The Award is part of the RTAA’s response to our industry’s chronic and ongoing skills shortage. We know that our ageing workforce is retiring and we are not attracting or retaining new recruits. These are some of the challenges we need to address to create a vibrant, innovative and sustainable rail workforce. As an industry, it’s time to do something. Here are some suggestions:
  • Attract new recruits, and women in particular, by creating flexible workplaces
  • Be culturally inclusive by participating in events such as NAIDOC Week and Harmony Day
  • Promote awareness in unconscious bias to combat entrenched negative perceptions. Consider unconscious bias training – start with managers
  • Use blind-CVs (CVs without names) when recruiting and during the short-list process
  • Commit to the improvement of female representation in leadership roles – set targets and monitor progress
  • Encourage the employment of young people through graduate and traineeship programs.

For those who have started, or are just starting their diversity journey, the Award recognises the achievements of those organisations who are proactively promoting diverse and inclusive workplaces.

The winner will, not only be heavily promoted via the RTAA network, they will also receive a number of opportunities to promote their organisation’s diversity programs.

See rtaa.org.au for more information and a full list of the winner’s entitlements.

The Award will be announced at the RTAA’s Yellow Tie Dinner at AusRAIL in November 2017, Brisbane.
