through the Library Restoration Underway after Fire
A small fire in the men’s public restroom resulted in the Library closing early on Wednesday, April 15th. Library staff, alerted to smoke in the restroom, were able to call the alarm and evacuate everyone from the building safely. Thanks to the quick response of the Brighton Area Fire Department, the fire was soon extinguished, and the Library reopened as usual that Friday. The fire was started with a roll of toilet paper which ignited its plastic holder. There was significant heat and smoke damage to that restroom, which remains closed while drywall, tiling, plumbing fixtures and counters are repaired or replaced. The fire remains under investigation by the Police and Fire Departments as arson is suspected. We are thankful that the damage was not more extensive, and regret the inconvenience while the men’s facilities are under repair.
Michigan Activity Pass (MAP) to add State Parks and Rec Areas
The MAP program continues to grow!
MAP offers Library cardholders free or reduced-fee admission, or other discounts, at over 100 arts and cultural institutions statewide. While the program runs year-round, a renewed and expanded list of offerings launches May 24. The big news is that MAP has entered into a new partnership with Michigan DNR, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and Michigan Recreation and Parks Association that will result in the addition of some 230 state parks, recreation areas, state forest campgrounds, and state historic sites to the MAP program. You can search the listings and print your passes at the MAP website. Enter Brighton District Library in the search form to see links for passes.
Join the Teen Advisory Board?
The Teen Advisory Board is now accepting new members for Fall 2015. TAB members meet once a month to help plan library programs, create library displays, help out at library events, and advise our teen librarian on books, movies, and music to purchase for the library. A great opportunity for volunteer service! TAB is open to ages 13 and older.
Applications can be picked up at the information desk or printed from the library's website at brightonlibrary.info/teen_advisory_board.
