Going to the Faire?
The Michigan Renaissance Festival is the newest member of the cultural partnership providing discounted tickets to patrons of member libraries of The Library Network (TLN). Follow this link for details and ticket discounts of over 20%.

The Library is proposing a millage of 0.22 mills for operations, for a 20 year period.
This is the same amount that the Library Building Bond millage has averaged over the past few years. The bond will be paid off and the millage levy will expire in 2015.
The overall level of taxation to support the Library will remain the same.

With this revenue, the Library will be able to:
  • Reopen Thursdays
  • Restore materials budgets to offer a wider variety of new materials, expand our ebook offerings, and reduce waiting periods for popular items
  • Fund much needed upgrades to public restrooms, carpeting, and furniture
  • Budget for longer-term building needs without further cuts to public services
Further details of the Library's proposal are here. You can also contact Dr. Nancy B. Johnson, the Library Director, at 810-229-6571, ext. 203 or nbjohnson@brightonlibrary.info.
Hands Full?
Check out a basket!

Our nifty new wheeled baskets were provided by the Friends of the Brighton District Library for your use in the Library. You can get them at the Circulation Desk.
Little Hands Big Hearts
The whole Library staff was touched by the visit from Little Hands Big Hearts, who brought flowers and goodies to the Youth Department in appreciation for the 2015 Summer Reading Program. You are SO welcome!

Thanks to the generous support of the Friends of the Brighton District Library, we are pleased to bring back to our users the Mango Languages online language-learning system. Free to BDL cardholders, and accessible any time through the web or on mobile apps, each lesson combines real life situations and audio from native speakers with simple, clear instructions. The courses are presented with an appreciation for cultural nuance and real-world application by focusing on the four key elements of language learning: vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and culture.

Mango offers access to 60 foreign language courses and 17 English courses taught completely in the user’s native language. Your library card number is required for access
. Check it out now at

In Memory of Marjorie Wilcox
The Library would like to make a special acknowledgement for the donation of boxes of genealogy materials from Kristeen Bobo of Lansing. The items belonged to her mother, Marjorie Wilcox.
Marjorie was a volunteer at the Library many years ago, starting in the old Library building. It was Marjorie who came up with the idea of offering patrons genealogy assistance once a month and volunteered in that role for quite a while. We continue that practice to this day with our Genealogy Assistance on the first Tuesday of every month.

Michigan Activity Pass (MAP) adds State Parks and Rec Areas
The MAP program continues to grow!
MAP offers Library cardholders free or reduced-fee admission, or other discounts, at over 100 arts and cultural institutions statewide. The big news is that
MAP has entered into a new partnership with Michigan DNR, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and Michigan Recreation and Parks Association that has added some 230 state parks, recreation areas, state forest campgrounds, and state historic sites to the MAP program. You can search the listings and print your passes at the MAP website. Enter Brighton District Library in the search form to see links for passes.
