Report from Biomass 2014: Growing the Future Bioeconomy

On July 29–30, 2014, in Washington, DC, top government officials and members of Congress, industry leaders and experts from across the bioenergy supply chain engaged in ongoing dialogue about the critical challenges and key opportunities for the industry, the innovative technologies, priority pathways, financing strategies, and public policies needed to grow the bioeconomy of the future.

Advanced Biofuels USA co-hosted, managing the exhibit hall, breakfasts, breaks and reception.  Thanks to all who attended and supported this event; with special thanks to the folks at Abengoa who sponsored the reception.  See more highlights in photos.

EESI got it right in their article, Despite Setbacks, Biofuels Industry Hopeful at 2014 DOE Biomass Conference.

Attendees celebrated three U.S. advanced cellulosic biofuel refineries that are close to commercial production, several public-private partnerships that have spurred research and development of biofuels, and young scientists who are the future of renewable fuels breakthroughs.  Despite a lot of talk about the proposed cuts to the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), as well as a backlog of pending pathways for feedstocks to qualify as renewable fuels, attendees seemed confident that the bioeconomy would lower greenhouse gas emissions, provide local jobs, boost rural economies and lessen U.S. dependence on petroleum.

During a discussion of federal policy, speakers urged the industry to take the long view.  Despite a recent uptick in domestic oil and gas production, renewable fuels are still the way of the future. READ MORE

You often hear laments about lack of young people involved with biofuels.  From a look around at participants at Biomass 2014: Growing the Future Bioeconomy, it was evident that is not the case anymore.

As EESI noted, the sessions reviewed the trials and tribulations of transitioning to sustainable, renewable fuels.  It was pretty raw.  Yet, we heard over and over—from those engaged in the industry and from the next generation just joining this endeavor; from those in the US and from representatives from around the world (Nigeria, Spain, Pakistan, Brazil, Malaysia, Mexico, Colombia, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Canada, Japan, Angola, South Korea and China) â€”commitments to continue to persevere.

Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) from her perspective serving the Motor City, joined the history of ethanol as a fuel for early automobiles with a celebration of the historic first cellulosic RINs produced by American Process at the Alpena, Michigan plant in an inspiring and spirited speech.

She also urged development and use of high performance high octane/high ethanol fuel (such as E30) in engines optimized to achieve high mileage efficiency.

College students who said they were more interested than ever in becoming a part of this effort to transition to sustainable renewable fuels, even after hearing of the hardships experienced along the way, heartened some of the old hands, too.

And, if you had a chance to interact with the high school students attending—you were likely blown away at the quality of those coming into this arena.  The Department of Energy hosted a group of students from Washington state who won a Northwest regional poster competition.  In addition to presenting their poster during the Tuesday reception (shown here with Biofuels Digest's Jim Lane looking on), the group went to Capitol Hill to meet with their Senators and Congressional representative.

As Stephen Mayfield says in the DOE video which premiered at Biomass 2014 as described in the article above, "The big picture is: Fossil fuels are a finite resource and climate change is real. And those two things are overwhelming drivers for the world going forward. So, we have to have a sustainable solution that allows us to fuel the world in a way that we don't just completely trash the environment so the planet becomes unlivable."

That outlook seemed to motivate the people organizing, presenting, sponsoring, exhibiting and attending Biomass 2014.

Find posted presentations on the DOE BETO Biomass 2014 website soon.

On August 13, 2014, Advanced Biofuels USA's online library reached 14,000 posts with the addition of the announcement of the US Department of Energy's Bioenergy documentary.

Advanced Biofuels USA, a nonprofit educational organization advocates for the adoption of advanced biofuels as an energy security, military flexibility, economic development and climate change mitigation/pollution control solution.

The key tool for accomplishing this is its web site, www.AdvancedBiofuelsUSA.org, which has now grown to 14,000 postings about biofuels, advanced biofuels and related topics.

A resource for everyone from opinion-leaders, decision-makers and legislators to industry professionals, investors, feedstock growers and researchers; as well as journalists, teachers and students, the library includes items that reflect the thoughts, beliefs and philosophy of Advanced Biofuels USA along with items completely contrary to those.

Technology neutral and feedstock and product agnostic, Advanced Biofuels USA’s work is respected around the world. The site presents the conversation the world is having about biofuels, sustainability, climate change and related topics. Convinced that the world will be better off the more people know about myriad views, the site includes the wide range of scientific research, the successes and struggles, the well-considered controversies and the uninformed statements.

The "Coming Events" home page carousel and "More Coming Events" page direct readers to conferences, meetings, workshops, webinars, field days and courses around the world.

In addition, Advanced Biofuels  USA uses the library to prepare technology assessments, present briefing documents to Congressional staff, participate in international conferences on renewable fuels, provide both background and attributed interviews for a wide range of journalists and broadcast reporters, consult with international conference organizers, conduct presentations and lectures for civic and school groups, and provide general assistance to those interested in any facet of the world of advanced biofuels.

Venice 2014 – Fifth International Symposium on Energy from Biomass and Waste November 17-20 Venice, Italy

The production of energy from alternative sources and its impact on climate change are among the main strategic tools implicated in the sustainable development of our society. Numerous types of biomass and wastes contribute towards the production of energy and reduction in the use of fossil fuels by means of biological, chemical and thermal processes. Existing biomass and waste to energy technologies are currently undergoing rapid development. Despite growing interest in the use of these technologies, in many countries their implementation remains limited.

The aim of the Venice 2014 Symposium is to focus on the advances made in the application of technologies for energy recovery from biomass and waste and to encourage discussion in these fields. The previous edition of the Symposium, held in 2012, was attended by nearly 580 scientists and operators from approximately 62 different countries.

The fifth edition of the Symposium will be held in the stunning island of San Servolo in the Venetian Lagoon and will feature:

Three days of scientific presentations
One day of guided technical tours at biochemical and thermochemical plants
Six parallel oral sessions (one of which in Italian), poster sessions and an exhibition by companies working in the field
Expected attendance of over 600 delegates from tens of different countries worldwide
The Symposium is organized by the International Waste Working Group (IWWG) with the scientific support of the Universities of Queensland, Padova, Hokkaido, Rostock, Trento and Hamburg University of Technology.  READ MORE
