Earth Week Celebration: 10 Excellent Reasons to Transition to Sustainable Renewable Fuels

Advanced Biofuels USA recognized Earth Day by attending Biofuels Digest's Advanced Biofuels Leadership Conference (read more here and here) and by publishing 10 Excellent Reasons To Transition to Sustainable Renewable Fuels, a one-page Earth Week handout for use by civic organizations, church stewardship groups, environmental organizations, teachers, students and anyone interested in renewable transportation energy.

“By publishing this easy-to-understand handout, we are furthering this educational nonprofit’s mission to promote understanding, development and use of advanced biofuels,” explained executive director, Joanne Ivancic.  Instead of asking ‘why can’t we buy 100% renewable fuels for our vehicles TODAY?’ we pose the question ‘why should we?’”  We came up with 10 Excellent Reasons:

  1. Climate Change â€“Recycle carbon. Don’t release “new” carbon from its underground storage.
  2. Energy Security â€“ Peak Oil. We need to prepare for when oil runs out.
  3. Health Benefits â€“ Ethanol can replace carcinogenic aromatics, and substantially reduce harmful emissions.
  4. More Efficient Engines Require Biofuels â€“ Higher octane, higher ethanol transportation fuels. Engine manufacturers can maximize the efficiency of smaller, more efficient engines that utilize high combustion pressures and take advantage of other useful properties of ethanol. Cleaner, lower maintenance jet engines with renewable jetfuel.  Less expensive maintenance for biodiesel hybrid buses.
  5. Environmental Benefits â€“ Avoid deep water drilling oil spills, destruction of habitat from tar sands or fracking.
     
  6. National Security â€“ Military do not have to protect feedstock sources or transportation routes of advanced biofuels.
  7. Jobs â€“ Advanced biofuel production creates local jobs in agriculture, forestry, waste management, engineering, science and biorefineries. Not to mention the jobs which support these with food, shelter and services.
  8. Leadership in Science and Technology– Historically, the basis of economic success.  Advanced biofuels is today’s frontier.
  9. Keep your money at home! â€“ Do not spend your currency on foreign energy resources.
  10. Not Under Someone Else’s Control â€“ Lessen foreign energy providers’ power.

Featured Educational Materials: Pennsylvania's Daniel Boone High School's Green Team Algae Project
Sid Harwood and Shannon Helzer both have a military background, both are physics teachers at Daniel Boone High School in Birdsboro, PA, and both are committed to the success of the Go Clean, Go Green, Go Algae Project that developed biodiesel from algae.  The similarities between these leaders of the “Green Team” appear to end there, and that is exactly what they would like other teachers to know who are considering setting up an algae project for their own school.

Pamela Rockwell has worked as a scientist for more than 20 years, and has tried her hand at teaching, as well.  Bringing these two interests together, she will be covering educational events and working with Advanced Biofuels USA on educational projects.  Her look at Daniel Boone High School's Green Team (shown above at the Washington, DC, US Department of Energy Bioenergy Technologies Office; here and below giving a presentation to the Pennsylvania state Senate Environmental Resource Committee) not only tells the fascinating story about one school's nationally-recognized work; but also provides the insiders' view, first from the teachers' perspective; and, soon to come, through the eyes of the students.

What do the teachers know now that they wished they had known at the onset? What do they want other potential teachers to know before they set up their own projects? These were the questions put to the teachers and students of the Green Team.

Here's one tip: Allow time for the students’ learning curve. “We knew that starting with algae out of the local ponds was not the way to go, but we had to let the students take the lead from the start, and wait for them to see the results unfold.  It would have been faster and easier for them to begin from  where WE judged to be the best starting point and proceed according to OUR best judgment, but it would never have generated the kind of confidence they earned  by learning  from their own mistakes,” remarked  Helzer. “They figured it out and then applied what they had learned to a more appropriate algal species. – Their hard work wasn’t lost.”  READ MORE to find their extended answers.
 

On the Road: Conference Reports

Biofuels Discussions at Annual China International Bioenergy and Biomass Utilization Summit

Stefaniya Becking continues her international reporting for Advanced Biofuels USA traveling to Shanghi, China to cover the Annual China International Bioenergy and Biomass Utilization Summit April 23-15.

She reports, concerns about air pollution in China were voiced by a number of speakers at the summit which drew 500+ delegates took to Shanghai. At this conference, energy derived from biomass was promoted as a way to improve air quality in China by replacing some of the energy derived from coal.

The interest in biomass as an energy source is not surprising since biomass is the 4th largest energy source after coal, oil and natural gas. At the conference, Heinz Kopetz, President of World Bioenergy Association (WBA), presented statistics on global supply of energy and bioenergy.

Qi Xie, Principal Investigator at the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences reported that “sweet sorghum [Sorghum saccharatum] is interesting since some soils in China are alkaline [clay soils with pH > 8.5], and sorghum is able to grow in those soils.”

A representative from the Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology in Tsinghua University (Beijing, China) also expressed interest in adopting sweet sorghum as an energy crop in China, citing the crop’s properties: “sweet sorghum absorbs cadmium and other heavy metals, grows on marginal, alkaline, saline and dry land.”

Xueqin Zheng, Professor at the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, presented results of his breeding project on improving yield for the Jatropha curcas tree.  Zheng stressed that using jatropha based bio-jet fuel results in 75-80% less carbon dioxide emissions and no emissions of sulfur dioxide, which can “help the haze issue in China.”

Wang Shuyang, Director of Bioenergy Technology Engineering Center at Northeast Forestry University (Harbin, China), commented on another innovation that helps with the high cost of collecting feedstock material such as straw--combines.

On the biofuel production side, Yi-Feng Chen, Professor at Biotechnology Institute of Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences (Nanjing, China), presented research results for a way to make a microalgal biodiesel refinery profitable. READ MORE details about these presentations here.

Finland Rises up from Its Economic Crisis with Bioeconomy


Aino Siirala reports from her native Finland on discussions about the future and promise of developing a bioeconomy as a strategy to raise that country and Europe from the economic doldrums.

She reports that the seminar, sponsored by Benet Oy, started by reviewing the bioeconomic strategies of Europe and Finland, which seemed to have rather similar contents. Both strategies were targeting, for instance, creating new business activity and increasing employment by developing products and services based on renewable natural resources. Liisa Saarenmaa, the deputy head of a department in the Finnish ministry of agriculture and forestry, noted that the bioeconomy strategy of Finland is its growth strategy. Bioeconomy is a way to raise Finland from its economic crisis.

After the first half of the seminar she sensed many were concerned that the strategy of Finland will remain “just talk.” Now, she writes, after completing the strategy, is the time to take concrete steps. Are there enough small and medium-sized companies with the courage to take risks? Will they get investments and are they able to penetrate the jungle of licenses?

This fear was also brought up in the comment speech of Juha Sipilä, the chairman of the Centre Party. She reports on a perception that Finland invests in research but is lacking business spirit. READ MORE insights about this developing bioeconomy here.

Opportunities and Synergies of the 2014 Bioproducts World Showcase and Conference (BWSC)    and   Taking the Next Step: The Growing Production of Bio-Based Chemical Intermediates Enables New Opportunities


Milsa Vijayadharan exercised her interest in bioproducts by covering two recent webinars on the topic.  Ohio State University's OBIC hosted a webinar on Bioproducts World Showcase & Conference on April 25th 2014, with presenters from UbiFrance, Emery Oleochemical, Bio-Fiber Solutions International, Ohio Soybean Council and USDA Rural Development.

The presenters commented on consumers’ weak knowledge of biobased products, and strong interest in them. They agreed that consumer education and promotion of biobased products will help people to choose biobased products. The 2014 Bioproducts World Showcase & Conference which will be held on October 5-8, 2014 in Columbus, Ohio, with particiation of all the presenters, will shine a bright light on the bioproduct industry. Biobased product manufactures will get a chance to tell their stories. Biobased material producers will be able to get their materials to biobased product manufacturers and to the conventional product manufacturers.  READ MORE

She brings us a more technical look at bioproducts in her coverage of Luxresearch's March 4th 2014, webinar about new opportunities for downstream producers due to the growing production of bio-based chemical intermediates. Presenters pointed out that first generation sugar will remain the dominant feedstock, however, bioproducts from next  generation sugars need investment in the value chain now.

She reports that with all the advancements in the production of bio-based chemical intermediates and applications, bio-based chemical manufacturing is here to stay.  Factors determining the success of bio-based chemical markets is the same as that for traditional chemical producers. Both require affordable feedstock, efficient processes and ready customers.  Volatility of petroleum based feedstock and increasing demand from consumers and brand owners for more sustainable products present bio-based chemical companies with clear routes to market with demand having a high chance of growth in the coming years.  READ MORE details of the presentation, including specific intermediates and their producers.

Advanced Biofuels Leadership Conference Exhibits Rumblings of Discontent Amid Some  Positive Notes


Joanne Ivancic's reports on Biofuels Digest's annual Advanced Biofuels Leadership Conference explored a new level of criticism aimed at the Obama administration and its lack of enthusiastic support, not to mention perceived undermining, of advanced biofuels development and deployment.

Except for the Department of Defense, especially the Navy (Chris Tindal, Deputy Director for Renewable Energy, Department of the Navy Energy Office in photo), and the US Department of Agriculture (Harry Baumes, Director, Office of Energy Policy and New Uses at USDA in photo), administration leaders seem to have dropped their interest in "replacing the whole barrel," focusing instead on the fossil fuel elements of the "all of the above" status quo policies.
 
She reported that Advanced Biofuels Association's executive director, Mike McAdams did not pull punches about the administration staff’s inability to understand financing of advanced biofuels projects and inability to appreciate the multi-billions of dollars of private investment which have been insulted and endangered by recent policy activities.

That the Environmental Protection Agency would ignore the existence of real advanced biofuel production as they develop the renewable volume obligation numbers related to the Renewable Fuel Standard and would increase greenhouse gas emissions contrary to the intent of the Clean Air Act legislation seemed beyond comprehension unless, as many there were starting to appreciate, this administration seeks to undercut the achievements of the Clean Air Act rather than to further them.

Talk during the presentations and in the hallways speculated that the energy policy of this administration is “cheap gasoline at all (environmental, social and economic)costs.”

On a more positive note, she reported on the inspirational impact of Truman National Security Project's executive director, Michael Breen's (pictured here) opening remarks on the second day of the conference.  He reinforced reasons for people to keep striving against steep odds to design, produce and deploy home-grown renewable fuels and bio-based products. READ MORE analysis here and here.

2nd International Symposium on “Sustainable Science, Technology, Human Health and Environment for a Global Society" Brings International Scientists to Baltimore, MD


During this two-day event, scientists and professors gathered on Coppin State University’s campus to discuss the latest innovations in their respective fields, participated in workshops, and attended technical presentations.

The wide range of topics demonstrated consciousness of the links and inter-dependence of four scientific research topics in hopes that cross-fertilization resulting from bringing experts in these fields together could lead to a better understanding and knowledge of science, technology, human health and environmental issues.

Dr. Jamal Uddin, the organizer of the symposium, finds this vital not only to protect our fragile environment, but also to ensure it is safe and healthy for present and future generations.

OBIC BioVan Visits Advanced Biofuels USA Office in Frederick, MD


Ohio State University's OBIC BioVan stopped at the Advanced Biofuels USA office as part of the Sustainable World Tour.

On this trip, OBIC Bioproducts Innovation Center Director Denny Hall and Dustin Homan, Program Director for Bioproduct Education, started their trip at the BIO conference in Philadelphia.  They visited with US Department of Energy officials in Washington, DC; then stopped in Frederick, Maryland, on their way back to Ohio in their E85-fueled Ford flex-fuel van.

The OBIC BioVan takes educational programs and materials about bioproducts and building a sustainable world to schools, shopping centers, conferences and more.  Contact OBIC for more information.

Venice 2014 – Fifth International Symposium on Energy from Biomass and Waste November 17-20 Venice, Italy

The production of energy from alternative sources and its impact on climate change are among the main strategic tools implicated in the sustainable development of our society. Numerous types of biomass and wastes contribute towards the production of energy and reduction in the use of fossil fuels by means of biological, chemical and thermal processes. Existing biomass and waste to energy technologies are currently undergoing rapid development. Despite growing interest in the use of these technologies, in many countries their implementation remains limited.

The aim of the Venice 2014 Symposium is to focus on the advances made in the application of technologies for energy recovery from biomass and waste and to encourage discussion in these fields. The previous edition of the Symposium, held in 2012, was attended by nearly 580 scientists and operators from approximately 62 different countries.

The fifth edition of the Symposium will be held in the stunning island of San Servolo in the Venetian Lagoon and will feature:

Three days of scientific presentations
One day of guided technical tours at biochemical and thermochemical plants
