16th Annual Congressional Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency EXPO + Policy Forum  June 12, 2013

On Wednesday-June 12, the Sustainable Energy Coalition - in cooperation with Members of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Caucuses - will host the 16th annual Congressional Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency EXPO + Forum.  Its theme will be “Renewable Energy + Energy Efficiency = Domestic Energy & American Jobs to Strengthen the U.S. Economy”.

This year’s EXPO will bring together about fifty sustainable energy industry trade associations, businesses, government agencies, and energy policy research organizations to showcase the status and near-term potential of the cross-section of renewable energy (biofuels, biomass, geothermal, solar, water, wind) and energy efficiency technologies (inc. fuel cells, CHP).  Members of the U.S. Congress and Administration spokespersons will address the EXPO at noon-time while throughout the day other speakers will discuss the role sustainable energy technologies can play in meeting America’s energy needs.

In recent years, the annual EXPO + Forum has attracted between 500 and 650 visitors, including Members of Congress, key congressional staff, representatives of Executive Branch agencies, the media, advocacy organizations, sustainable energy businesses, and other interested members of the general public. A video and other information documenting aspects of the 15th EXPO + Forum held in June 2012 can be found at http://www.eesi.org/expo2012.   Advanced Biofuels USA plans to exhibit again this year.  Watch emails for details.  Shown is Advanced Biofuels USA executive director, Joanne Ivancic with Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D, MD-8th) at the 2012 event.

On the Road
George Mason University's Energy and the Environment Class
On March 4, 2013, Advanced Biofuels USA executive director, Joanne Ivancic presented an advanced biofuels primer to Professor Harold Geller's Energy and the Environment class at George Mason University.  "I'm especially pleased to be here," Ivancic explained,"as this is the main opportunity in the class syllabus for you to learn about biofuels." Ivancic used the first part of the publicly available slide program which focuses on answering the questions: What Are Advanced Biofuels? Why Are They Important?  What Are They Used For?  How Are They Made?  Can We Buy Them NOW?

The slide presentation also includes a class/group activity to develop a deeper understanding of the concept of sustainability from economic, environmental and social perspectives.

The next stop "on the road" will be a presentation on April 2 hosted by the Ohio State University chapter of Student Engineers for a Sustainable World.

Impressions on Conference Style in Asia and Challenges Facing the Biofuel Industry in Asia
Stefaniya Becking again donated her services to represent Advanced Biofuels USA at an international conference, this time at the “Sugar & Ethanol Asia 2013” conference organized by F.O. Licht.  It took place in Bangkok, Thailand, on February 26-27, 2013. This event attracted 125 people representing 20 countries (mostly private sector in Asian countries). The focus of presentations stayed on worldwide trends and the economic status of the sugar ethanol industry.  Becking gives her impressions of the conference content and attendees in a wide-ranging article.  She is shown in the photo with Claudio Marquez, Tradhol Internacional S.A., Logistics Manager (based in Spain) on the left and Michael Grech, F.O. More Volunteer Activities
You can always find articles written by Advanced Biofuels USA volunteer staff in the "Original Writing, Opinions Advanced Biofuels USA" category on the Advanced Biofuels USA website.  Even if we don't have photos on the scene, we are busy behind the scenes.

This spring, we have welcomed a number of Hood College students to the team.  Shown in the office are Zhang Rui (Amanda), who is studying for her MBA after earning an Bachelor of Environmental Engineering and Master of Chemical Engineering in Xi'an Shaanxi, PRC; and Joshua Rathod who joined his BA in Biology from Hood College with a minor in vocal performance.  We hope that he finds success in both fields.

Fundraising
You may receive a note from Rathod  or from Vidya Ramanathan (based in Boston and volunteering with us when not teaching Sanskrit or working with computers) with information on sponsoring our website, newsletter and organization, in general.  Please respond generously.

Job Search Resources
In response to positive comments we have received about the value of our job search resources, we have decided to add another dimension to them, with links to career/job pages for companies that we know are involved with advanced biofuels.  Rui is spearheading that project.  We add updates every week or so.

Articles and Reports
You may be familiar with Rathod's writing as he often represents the organization at local hearings, conferences and other events; and reports on them for you in our Original Writing, Opinions pages.  This month he has two articles; one reporting on his experiences at a local Clean Cities meeting and reception and the other a review of an ACORE webinar comparing biofuels expansion in China and the US.

We continue to exist as an all-volunteer organization, although we would like that to change and to be able to compensate everyone for their professional contributions.  Please help us continue to provide these valuable, objective and independent educational services with your generous donations.  Just click on the Donate button.
