In her address to attendees, executive director Joanne Ivancic reflected on the theme of the conference, "Confronting Challenges, Creating Opportunities: Sustaining a Commitment to Bioenergy."
She remembered the first Biomass 2008 when DOE Secretary Samuel Bodman made an unscheduled visit to the conference to rally the troops after a scathing article criticizing ethanol, and by extension all biofuels, appeared in Time Magazine. She recalled Secretary Bodman telling us that what we were doing was important, urging us to keep pursuing the vision, a vision of an evolution to a more sustainable, renewable energy future.
In the intervening years, we have learned that achieving that vision was harder than we thought it would be. Biomass is more recalcitrant than expected; as is the politics. And all this in a collapsing economy. It's a wonder we have gotten as far as we have. We have achieved much in the face of daunting opposition. And we are not giving up. We are continuing our work to achieve that vision.

15th Annual Congressional Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency EXPO + Forum
Work toward that vision was also evident on June 21, as the Sustainable Energy Coalition - in cooperation with Members of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Caucuses held the the 15th Annual Congressional Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency EXPO + Forum. The Advanced Biofuels USA table served many visitors from Congressional staff to Washington interns to professionals in the biofuels and other renewable energy fields.
Advanced Biofuels USA treasurer, Bob Kozak helped staff the table and executive director, Joanne Ivancic, also spoke at the Forum on the biofuels panel. Congressmen Roscoe Bartlett (R-6th MD), Chris Van Hollen (D-8th MD) and Brian Bilbray (R- 50th CA) stopped by to chat before and after they addressed the Expo audience. Congressman Bartlett, known as the "Peak Oil Congressman" represents the home district of Advanced Biofuels USA. Congressman Bilbray and Bob Kozak discussed old times when they worked together on air quality projects in California. Redistricting has brought Congressman Van Hollen's district into Advanced Biofuels USA's home county, Frederick, MD.
Over fifty businesses, sustainable energy industry trade associations, government agencies, and energy policy research organizations showcased the status and near-term potential of the cross-section of renewable energy (biofuels/biomass, geothermal, solar, water, wind) and energy efficiency technologies. Advanced Biofuels USA On The Road
Advanced Biofuels USA volunteers participated in a number of other events this Summer.
Next Generation Engines and Fuels Forum and Workshop
On June 20, board member and Advanced Biofuels USA founder, Bob Kozak, president of Atlantic Biomass Conversions, spoke on a panel at the Next Generation Engines and Fuels Forum. Moderated by David Shepardson of The Detroit News, Bob joined Pavel Molchanov of Raymond James, Kristy Moore of the Renewable Fuels Association and Mike Rocke of CoolPlanetEnergySystems in a discussion of the "Challenges to Getting Advanced Ethanols and Drop-In Biomas-Based Fuels into Production and to the Marketplace." As was true for the entire 3-day event, a lively give-and-take ensued.
Presentation and discussion topics at this conference concentrated on the prospects of transitioning from petroleum-based fuels to bio-based fuels for next generation engines built to achieve proposed new CAFE standards of 54.5 mpg. Representatives of the automotive, oil/gas and biofuels industries, along wtih representatives of the retail sector, came together, for exciting, productive, and practical conversations.
Many speakers remarked that this was the first time they could remember of all these stakeholders, who are so important to transitioning to renewable sustainable transportation fuels, met together on the same stage. Many expressed hope that this would be the beginning of more productive meetings together.
Of note, light duty vehicle design engineers represented by auto industry leaders such as GM, Ford, VW and Ricardo generally agreed that next generation engines need to be light weight and high performance. They observed that high octane fuels would be essential to achieve these goals. They also stated a preference that the octane come from ethanol. In addition to octane, ethanol brings other properties that enhance the characteristics of the fuel that these new engines will need to achieve the more than 50 mpg that will be needed to meet the proposed CAFE engine efficiency standards.
Panelists also highlighted the importance of changes to Tier 3 standards compatible with progress toward greater efficiency.
Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference / American Chemistry Society Green Chemistry Initiative
Also in June Advanced Biofuels USA joined the international attendees at the American Chemistry Society Green Chemistry Initiative's Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference in Washington, DC. Our intrepid group of DC-based volunteers, Sharon Ji and Josh Rathod, lead by Peggy Alpert, staffed an information table for the three days of the conference.
The ACS GCI conferences include a strong turnout of professionals, academic leaders and students from around the world. These events provide an outstanding venue for learning about Green Chemistry and Engineering.
We have made wonderful friends; and have learned a lot at these conferences, knowledge that we bring to our broader understanding of the world of advanced biofuels and biochemicals. Thanks to the American Chemistry Society Green Chemistry Institute for inviting us to participate again and for donating exhibit space.
Energy Path 2012
Last year the Advanced Biofuels USA board decided that we should broaden our outreach, should participate in events with audiences beyond the biofuels world. In addition to our work with ACS GCI, we accepted an invitation to speak June 28 at Pennsylvania's Sustainable Energy Fund's annual week long Energypath 2012 conference and pre-conference energy camps. The Fund also donated exhibit space to Advanced Biofuels USA.
DeSales University in Center Valley, Pennsylvania hosted Energy Path 2012 this year. Joanne Ivancic used the PowerPoint presentation available on the Advanced Biofuels USA website to provide an overview of advanced biofuels, including a description of current technologies being developed and those being implemented; and a view of the future, depending on various scenarios of public policy. You can find that presentation, along with "teachers' notes" and other public-use slide shows in the Biofuels Basics section of our website.
"I highly recommend attending this event if you have the chance," urges Ivancic. "In addtion to hands-on workshops and classroom sessions, the event included a science fair/poster session, showing of the movie, YERT, Your Environmental Road Trip, and an inspiring talk by William Kamkwamba of Malawi, known as "the boy who harnessed the wind."
Kamkwamba recounted the famine of his childhood in 2001-2 that killed off many in his country, leaving his farming community devastated. He described how he taught himself to build a windmill from junk yard scraps to provide electricity for his village. Now a student at Dartmouth, his nonprofit expands his youthful work adding solar to wind power in his village and others.
For more about EnergyPath 2012, read Joanne's reports here and here.
An additional benefit for Advanced Biofuels USA was the addition of new volunteers. Yue Yin, pictured in the white shirt at the computer below, jumped right in substantially completing our searchable spreadsheet of company information within a few weeks of joining. See the education tools feature below for more information.
Resource for Journalists Advanced Biofuels USA strives to provide a well-rounded source of information for a variety of audiences from legislators and their staffs at local, state and federal levels to journalists and reporters to students, teachers and the general public, as well as to industry professionals in all aspects of the value chain. We often provide one-on-one consultation with a variety of individuals; and do occasional interviews with reporters for the record and on background. We often refer reporters and others to a variety of resources in addition to those on our web site. Don't hesitate to call or write.
Featured Educational Materials
Searchable Spreadsheet of Biofuels Related Companies
For years we have been trying to provide a searchable list of companies that are involved with biofuels and advanced biofuels. We have an alphabetical list by company name on the website, but no indication of what those companies do.
Thanks to new volunteer Yue Yin, we now have in a searchable spreadsheet, all of those companies, a link to their website and an indication of basic information such as location, size, type of business, products or technologies, etc. Now, if you are looking for a job with a company that works with algae, you should be able to find them on that spreadsheet. If you want to sell used cooking oil, oil from seed crops or biomass to a conversion enterprise, you can search in this list. If you need a law firm that has experience with biofuels-related issues, you might find a number to choose from on this list.
Although substantially complete, we will continue to update and polish this tool. If you have suggestions or want to have your company added to the list, contact us at info@advancedbiofuelsusa.org.
As Always: Keep an eye on our web site category "Education" and its subcategories such as "Education: For Teachers," as well as the Biofuels Basics section with it's page of Slides and Presentations for Public Use. We'll share information about educational materials and projects as we hear about them. If you have developed teaching materials or projects about biofuels and advanced biofuels that you are willing to share, please contact us at info@advancedbiofuelsusa.org."
