Happenings on Capitol Hill, at the White House and in Federal Agencies

A concept called the "open fuels standard" has made its way into a number of pieces of legislation this year.  Advanced Biofuels USA published an assessment of the OFS by board member, Bob Kozak.  It garnered quite a bit of attention with media coverage in Greenwire, and Ethanol Producer Magazine and a tweet that was picked up by Biofuels Digest..  Essentially, it is the position of Advanced Biofuels USA that open fuels legislation should be limited to renewable fuels.

Congressman Roscoe Bartlett (R-Maryland 6th) will host a Go Green Expo at the fairgrounds in Frederick, Maryland on June 13.  Advanced Biofuels USA will have an exhibit table.  It's a free day of exhibits and seminars to help businesses, farmers and homeowners "go green."  Stop by if you are in the area.

Advanced Biofuels USA will also exhibit and executive director Joanne Ivancic will speak as a Biofuels Panel member at the
Congressional Sustainable Energy EXPO + Forum on June 16 at the U.S. House of Representatives Cannon Office Building Caucus Room.  This is also free from 9:30-4:40.  Please come to talk with exhibitors and hear the forum speakers.  Hear remarks from members of Congress and representatives from federal agencies, as well.

Projects Underway   Volunteers and Our Activities:  Publications has been the key word this month with two special additions to our educational resources.

Syngas Fermentation: The Third Pathway for Cellulosic Ethanol
Coskata teamed with Advanced Biofuels USA to put together a paper explaining the syngas fermentation pathway to ethanol production.  Much has been written elsewhere about the variations on two other pathways, usually referred to as biochemical and thermochemical.  In our continuing effort to fill in gaps of understanding, Advanced Biofuels USA was pleased to have the experts in this hybrid process that combines elements of both other pathways involved in this project.

Fuels of the Future: The Bioalcohol Paradigm
Drew Sowersby, a volunteer from Texas State University doing research in advanced alcohol fuels, put together a slide presentation which offers an in-depth technical perspective of liquid fuels and demonstrates the significant potential of bioalcohols to provide for near-term transportation energy needs of modern society.  The presentation includes numerous charts, graphs and illustrations with text in the notes section below many slides to guide the narrative of anyone who wants to use any of the slides in this presentation in a classroom, for personal education and for other public or civic organizations.

Education:   Keep an eye on our web site category "Education" and its subcategories such as "Education: For Teachers."  We'll share information about educational materials and projects as we hear about them.  If you have developed teaching materials or projects about biofuels and advanced biofuels that you are willing to share, please contact us at

    Telling Our Story
Advanced Biofuels USA has been accepted to be part of the Renewable Energy Database based in Berlin, Germany.  This web-based database was created in 2008 by a group of students professionally and privately dealing with the subjects of renewable energies and energy efficiency. Since the beginning, their mission has been to make the rapidly developing renewable energy market more transparent and, through the popularization of the most recent and efficient technologies in the green sector, to make global development more sustainable.   In 2011, with over 15 000 visitors monthly from 97 countries, it is one of the major global renewable energy platforms participating in the global transfer of knowledge in the green energy sector.  See our logo and listing here on the Renewable Energy Organisations map.
