Lots of Fun at EnergyPath 2016 Conference  — July 28-29 — Penn State/State College, PA.

Danilo Gusmão de Quadros has provided highlights, along with audio from interviews with presenters and participants.

After Quadros' oft-repeated criticism about biofuels education and the big gap between research and the job market, he was pleased to experience one of the best examples of how to bring these interests closer together.  It was demonstrated by the Sustainable Energy Fund organizing, at Pennsylvania State University (PSU) for one week, a group of activities involving people from different education levels and with different ambitions.

From the 3-day Energycamp, the Renewable Energy and Sustainability Systems Graduate Program (RESS) symposium,  to the 2-day Energypath conference and expo the week provided something for everyone giving all the attendees high levels of information in a variety of areas of renewable energy and biofuels--putting together theory and practice.

In the article, Joanne Ivancic shares stories from the Expo floor, especially from students who participated in the competitions/science fairs such as Michelle Surine (pictured below) who measured energy from watermeal/duckweed, "Green Energy: Can Wolffia (Watermeal) be Used as a Viable Biomass Fuel Source," taking the $750 second prize for middle school competition.  Click here for lists of other winners.

Held each year at a Pennsylania college or university, Energypath is funded by sponsors and proceeds from a settlement approved by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission during the Commonwealth’s electric deregulation proceedings in 1999.

Quadros and Ivancic both agree that initiatives like Energypath should be repeated nationwide, if not state-by-state, then on a regional basis.  Quadros sees this as a way to spread renewables culture and to form a new generation of “soldiers of wellness” in academia, schools and industries looking  to making a better world to live in.

Plan to attend EnergyPath 2017 and see for yourself!  Details coming soon.  READ MORE

Symposium on Thermal and Catalytic Sciences for Biofuels and Biobased Products — November 1-4, 2016 — Chapel Hill, NC

The 2016 symposium will spotlight recent technical advances in thermochemical biomass conversion to biofuels, bioproducts, and biopower and provide a showcase for energy experts to introduce themselves and their research to the audience to look for unique collaboration opportunities.

This symposium has been held every other year following the first symposium held in 2010 at Iowa State University with the goal of focusing on thermochemical biomass research and development and providing early career scientists and engineers an opportunity to present their research and interact with the senior researchers in the community. A tradition at these meetings has been the student poster competition recognizing outstanding poster contributions by undergraduate and graduate students.

A renewed enthusiasm for thermochemical biomass conversion emerged in the early 2000s with increased federal budgets, renewable fuel standards, pre-commercial demonstration of technologies, and the advent of advanced (hydrocarbon) biofuels. Prominent researchers in the field wanted to build on the success of earlier meetings and convene another symposium series focused more on opportunities for the next generation of thermochemical biomass researchers.   READ MORE
