New from OHRC

OHRC and the Dental Quality Alliance, consortium partners in the Center for Oral Health Systems Integration and Improvement (COHSII), have released Oral Health Quality Indicators for the Maternal and Child Health Population: Technical Specifications and User Guide for 2019 Reporting and the year two report, Identifying and Implementing Oral Health Quality Indicators for the Maternal and Child Health Population: 2018–2019. These resources are the work of COHSII’s Quality Indicator Advisory Team, which was convened to provide subject-matter expertise to guide and inform the identification and use of oral health quality indicators for the maternal and child health population. Pilot implementation of the quality indicators continues in five state oral health programs. A handout, Oral Health Quality Indicators for the Maternal and Child Health Population, listing the indicators is also available. More information about the quality indicators project is online.

Insights and Key Considerations for Implementing Value-Based Payment in Children’s Oral Health: Perspectives from Participating States

CMS’s Medicaid Innovation Accelerator Program Children’s Oral Health Initiative on Value-Based Payment (VBP) is hosting a national webinar August 27, 2019, from 2:00-3:15 PM ET to showcase the support provided, successes, and key takeaways of the three participating states: the District of Columbia, Michigan, and New Hampshire.

Representatives from these Medicaid agencies will describe their process of implementing VBP and contracting approaches to incentivize reductions in adverse children’s oral health care outcomes (e.g., caries, emergency department utilization). The webinar presenters will describe their processes for defining a project aim and metrics, successes to date, strategies used to overcome barriers, and considerations required (e.g., stakeholder engagement, methods for data collection and analysis) to implement VBP. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage in a facilitated question-and-answer  session. Register

Funding Opportunity

Rural Health Network Development Program
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) announced a new Notice of Funding Opportunity for the Rural Health Network Development Program (Network Development). This program will support up to 46 applicant organizations, which are either public or nonprofit private, rural, entities who represent a network of three or more separate, existing health care entities. HRSA expects to invest approximately $13 million for this program to support integrated rural health care networks that combine the functions of the network entities and include skilled, experienced staff, with a high functioning network board, in order to address the health care needs of the targeted rural community.

Previously funded networks under this program designed and carried out projects focused on coordinated care for patients, chronic disease management, behavioral health improvement, and utilizing/enhancing telehealth technology, among other issues for rural communities. See page 16 for oral health grants. Full details of the program and requirements for applicants are available at Grants.gov. The application deadline is November 25, 2019.

Toolkit

Protect Tiny Teeth
The American Academy of Pediatrics, through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has recently released the Protect Tiny Teeth Toolkit to help health care providers communicate with pregnant women and new families about the importance of oral health. The kit is organized into two sections: Oral Health Resources for Pregnant Women and Oral Health Resources for Families with Infants. Each section includes patient outreach and clinical practice resources. All materials are translated into English and Spanish and some of the patient outreach materials are also translated into 6 additional languages (French, Cambodian, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, Russian, and Korean). To help you to use the kit there are step-by-step directions, a social media toolkit, and the opportunity to customize the materials with your organization's logo.
