February 2019

The following news and resources are featured by the National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center (OHRC).

New from OHRC

February is Children's Dental Health Month

OHRC's website is rich with resources for you to search, use, and share any time of the year, but we love to feature our materials for consumers during National Children's Dental Health month. Many of these are available in several languages but they are all in an easy-to-read layout with great photos. And they can be downloaded and printed at no charge. Or, post links to them from your website. Following are selected resources.
Healthy Habits for Happy Smiles is a series of handouts for pregnant women and parents of infants and young children provides simple tips on oral health issues. There are sixteen titles available in English and Spanish about fluoride, nutrition, oral hygiene, oral care, safety, and other topics. Photocopying is allowed. Choose one topic, or download the complete series in English or Spanish.
Oral Health Tips for Families provides information to help families ensure that their children's oral health begins in infancy. Photocopying is allowed for this one-page handout, also available in Amharic, Arabic, Armenian, Burmese, Chinese, HmongMarshallese, Polish, Somali, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Yiddish.
Tips for Good Oral Health During Pregnancy is excerpted from Oral Health Care During Pregnancy: A National Consensus Statement. A permission statement appears at the bottom of the resource explaining that permission is given to photocopy it or forward it, in its entirety, to others. This two-page handout for pregnant women is also available in ArabicChineseChuukeseGermanKoreanPortugueseRussianSamoanSpanish, and Vietnamese.

In the News

In celebration of National Children’s Dental Health Month, the American Academy of Pediatrics teamed with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to develop a social media toolkit to promote a new oral health communications toolkit, Tiny Teeth. Use the information on social media, in newsletters, and other outreach tools (hashtags #NCDHM and #TinyTeeth). Use the Tiny Teeth materials (poster, brochure, infographics, and video) available in English and Spanish to raise awareness about the importance of oral health during pregnancy.

On Thursday, February 21, encourage pregnant women to tune into "Brushing for Two: How to Keep Your Baby's Teeth Healthy From the Start," a webinar at 2:00 pm ET. Host Jennifer Shu, MD, FAAP, a practicing pediatrician and mother in Atlanta, will explain why oral health is important during pregnancy and offer tips for pregnant women on how to take care of their own mouths and their little ones' once they have arrived.
We hope to see you at the National Oral Health Conference, co-sponsored by our consortium partner, the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors (ASTDD), and the American Association of Public Health Dentistry. The conference will be held April 15-17, 2019, in Memphis, TN, with weekend workshops beforehand. OHRC will be exhibiting. Registration is open now with an early bird rate through March 8.
OHRC services are supported by a cooperative agreement (U44MC30806) from the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Health Resources and Services Administration.
