The risk is real: Expect ransomware

There has been a significant increase in successful ransomware attacks after Colonial Pipeline paid $4.4M USD to hackers and meat producer JBS paid $11M USD. As members of a large institution, it is important for the U of T community to understand the risk of ransomware attacks and how to protect ourselves. Connect+Learn: Back to campus series

Getting ready to return to campus and want to understand the tools that are available to you? This August, join Connect+Learn's back to campus series. Enterprise Applications & Solutions Integration (EASI) will host information sessions on popular tools that can help your team prepare for a hybrid work environment and learn how these tools and applications can fit into your hybrid workplace. AskRegistrar wins Quality & Productivity Award

University of Toronto's Mississauga (UTM) Office of the Registrar team has earned a Quality and Productivity Award for AskRegistrar, a system which optimizes registrarial student services and staff workflow in a remote environment. The program has shortened response times, with most questions now answered within one to two business days. Read more about this prestigious award and the AskRegistrar system.

IT@UofT People Profile - Do Anh Vu

This month, IT@UofT People Profiles talks to Do Anh Vu, Acting Associate Director of Information Technology (IT) in the Division of Student Life. Do Anh endures extreme weather to get the perfect shot on a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera - a hobby that has produced a lifetime of memories since 1998. Microsoft retiring Skype for Business on Jan. 31

Microsoft will retire Skype for Business Online as of Jan. 31, 2022. Until then, existing Skype for Business users at the University of Toronto (U of T) will experience no change of service. If your team is still using Skype for online meetings or in conference rooms, the EASI team recommends upgrading to Microsoft Teams. Read the full memo

UTM’s Battling Burnout video series has been awarded Best Administrative/Non-Academic Campaign of the Year at the inaugural Higher Ed Social Awards. Ten tech tips to prepare for return to campus

EASI has created a Return to Campus ITS Toolkit, which assembles information on key products and technologies that can help make your return to campus seamless. Use this toolkit to find information on products that can help your hybrid team stay connected when working on campus and remotely.  Review these toolkit tips to prepare for your return to campus.

Absence Declaration enhancement

EASI released an upgrade to the Absence Declaration tool available in ACORN. The enhancement allows administrators to track current, past and cancelled absences with more detail, including date, course, session, instructor, students’ notes and administrators’ notes. The administrators’ screens for Absence Declaration are housed on the Online Administrative Student Information Services (OASIS) platform.

SECURITY MATTERS

E-token to migrate to UTORMFA

Beginning in fall 2021, e-token authentication for high security logins will begin migrating to U of T's multi-factor authentication (MFA) solution, UTORMFA, which has already been adopted by over 9,000 members of the U of T community. Learn more about the UTORMFA migration process.

Beware of phishing attacks

A recent phishing attempt was received by members of the University community. If you receive a suspicious email, report it to report.phishing@utoronto.ca or use the “report message” function in your Office 365/UTMail+ inbox.
