Rendering of the statue to be built in New York's Central Park
Six years after Monumental Women's Statue Fund was created; two years after we secured a statue site; 15 months after we selected the winning sculptor of our Design Competition; one year after we began dealing with the NYC Public Design Commission; and 166 years after Central Park was built: we are thrilled to announce that we finally have won approval to build the first statue of real women in Central Park!

Literally moments ago, the New York City Public Design Commission approved our statue of women’s rights pioneers Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Susan B. Anthony. And we wanted you to be the first to know.

A huge thanks to everyone – like you – who helped get us to this point. We are grateful to each person, foundation, or organization who helped us raise $1.5 million to fund the statue, everyone who spoke out in support of the statue’s approval; and all those who attended meetings, rallies and other events. We couldn’t have done it without you. A special thank you to our good friend Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer who was with us every step of the way, pressing the city to move the process forward.

There’s much more work to be done, including our Women's History Education Campaign and our Challenge to Municipalities across the country to re-imagine their public spaces to honor all women and people of color. But today was a very good day and we wanted to share it with you. We certainly are looking forward to celebrating with all of you as we unveil the Women's Rights Pioneers Monument on August 26, 2020 in Central Park.

In the meantime, you can stay connected with Monumental Women through our website or by following us on social media (Facebook, Twitter, and our #100YearsWomenVote campaign on Instagram at @monumentalwomennyc. The campaign highlights key people and events from the long fight for women’s suffrage).

With much gratitude,

Pam Elam,
President of Monumental Women
on behalf of our Board of Directors
