News from Youth Rebuilding New Orleans

Our Project HOMEwork house at 318 South Salcedo Street is now in the hands of Ben Ifshin, a biology teacher at Sci Academy, one of YRNO's partner schools in the Future Leaders Initiative.  Ifshin moved to New Orleans almost five years ago and after renting all that time, he can now put down roots in the city.  â€œI was actually looking to buy a house for like four months and just couldn’t find anything that I could afford, and then finally this house came out and it was exactly what I was looking for—size, neighborhood, everything,” he said last week.  We're thrilled to help, Ben!

More Wishes Granted

YRNO won three more grants in recent months.  The first from the Greater New Orleans Foundation’s Pratt-Stanton Manor Fund will establish a new program to help seniors repair and rehabilitate their homes, a second from the Brown Foundation will continue funding a service learning initiative with partner high schools, and the third from the City of New Orleans Edward Wisner Donation will support our existing REbuild program.  We're so thankful to all for backing YRNO initiatives!

New Staff Members

YRNO has a new Construction Manager, Joe Robert, who has been in the business for more than 30 years.  We also have two new AmeriCorps Youth Engagement Coordinators, Sandy Stibitz and Eliza Fields, who are working with students at Sci Academy and ReNEW Accelerated, respectively.  Welcome to the crew!

Vote for us!

Last year we won more than $44,000 for YRNO through the Super Service Challenge! Help us repeat that success by voting for YRNO volunteer videos. It's simple: click here and hit the vote buttons. The more votes we get, the better our chances to earn money!

Space Available

After a busy summer season of volunteers staying in our bunkhouse, we've now got plenty of availability for groups of up to 30 people, whether volunteering with YRNO or not.  We're happy to take returning groups, new groups or those who've previously stayed at the now closed Annunciation Mission.  Feel free to spread the word!  E-mail for more info.

The "Mayor" of YRNO

If you want to learn the story of William Stoudt from childhood through Katrina and right up to his present role as Executive Director at Youth Rebuilding New Orleans, check out this profile on our web site, written by Jack Styczynski and featuring many friends and family!

Community Gardens

Along with our rebuilding projects, YRNO has been helping out with beautification projects at Carver Prep, Carver Collegiate and Sci Academy in recent months, including the establishment and maintenance of community gardens at the schools.  Just last week, a group from Raising Cane's volunteered with us and pledged a generous donation.  Merci!
