News from Youth Rebuilding New Orleans

YRNO Welcomes New Staff Members

This summer, YRNO hired Kenneth “Murph” Whitman as our construction manager and Abby Hall, Sarah Watiker and Allison Zeal as AmeriCorps Youth Engagement Coordinators for the 2013-14 school year.  To read more about each, see our blog post from July on Murph and our story last week on Abby, Sarah and Allison. Welcome to all!

Web Site Wizardry

Another recent hire, Tulane AmeriCorps VISTA Jack Styczynski, has been hard at work freshening up the YRNO web site.  Along with establishing an active blog, he has overseen a major change to the front page, which now features the latest news at YRNO rather than the same ol’ pictures every time you visit!

Happy Hour Makes Us Happy

On Friday, August 23rd, the Dirty Coast t-shirt shop at 329 Julia Street held an “After Hours Happy Hour” benefiting YRNO, with 20 percent of proceeds going to our organization. That ended up being $325!  To view photos from the event, see our blog post from August.

Our Newest Program

The Student Leadership Team Free Enterprise Initiative is YRNO's newest project. Student representatives from diverse high schools will form a leadership team that will learn real estate development from the purchasing of a property through the construction and sale of a house. For more information, contact Abby Hall at abby@yrno.com.

Athletes in Action

A big sports fan, Jack also successfully recruited a group of Tulane athletes to come and volunteer with us at our South Salcedo Street rebuild site on Sunday, September 15th.  The special event was featured on the school’s web site and in the Tulane Hullabaloo.  To view photos, see our blog post from the next day.

Open House, October 5th!

On Saturday, October 5th, YRNO will hold an Open House from 1 to 4 p.m. for all to view its most recently completed home at 316 South Salcedo Street in Mid-City.  A local educator will soon become the owner of this beautifully-restored, three bedroom, two bathroom house with new plumbing, electrical, HVAC and interior finishes. Because volunteers helped us rebuild, YRNO can sell well below market rate. Spread the word to your teacher friends to come and see this great property!
