Happy Holidays from Youth Rebuilding New Orleans

Today is #GivingTuesday

So you've survived Black Friday and gotten through Cyber Monday, but we hope you don't forget Giving Tuesday today!  YRNO would love to have your support this holiday season, through December 31st.  Make a donation for yourself, request loved ones donate in your name, or donate in the name of that person who already has everything.  Use the PayPal link at the bottom of this newsletter or send a check payable to Youth Rebuilding New Orleans at 1933 Hope Street, New Orleans, LA 70119.  Since we are a 501(c)3 organization, all donations are tax deductible!

Vote for us!

Last year your efforts raised $29,000 for YRNO through the Super Service Challenge! Help us repeat that success by voting for your favorite YRNO volunteer video! It's simple: click here and search "Youth Rebuilding New Orleans." The more votes we get, the more money we can earn! Voting opens Friday, December 6th and closes Sunday, December 15th!

VIP and VISTAs Visit!

In October, YRNO hosted a roundtable discussion featuring Corporation for National and Community Service CEO Wendy Spencer and several Tulane AmeriCorps VISTAs, including our own Jack Styczynski. YRNO Executive Director Will Stoudt had the opportunity to show Ms. Spencer around our South Salcedo rebuild site and tell her about our mission. We were thrilled to represent the city of New Orleans, Tulane, the AmeriCorps VISTA program and YRNO for such an esteemed guest!

Welcome, Brandon!

As result of last month's Tulane Center for Public Service Internship Fair, freshman Brandon Golant will join YRNO as an intern for the spring semester.  Among the projects he'll tackle is a forthcoming historical photo section for our web site.  Stay tuned!

Making Progress

Our Student Leadership Team is now a group of nine students representing four schools (Archbishop Rummel, Holy Rosary, Sci Academy, Mount Carmel). So far, they've learned how to prepare and present a fundraising proposal, budget for a rebuilding project and work together as a team. After learning how to budget repair costs and inspect homes, the team has placed a bid on a property, and is excited to continue learning the next steps in the rebuilding process!

New Projects

In order to make the best use of our awesome and seemingly endless pool of volunteers, YRNO has begun adding some side projects to the ongoing work at our South Salcedo rebuild site.  We've had another group of Tulane athletes at a home in Hahnville, multiple groups at a home on Alvar Street in the 9th Ward, and still more volunteers at a special clean up day for a church on Elysian Fields. Thanks to everyone for the help!

For Sale

Our beautifully-restored home at 3524 Republic Street is ready to be sold to a local educator, so spread the word to your teacher friends in the market for affordable housing!  The New Orleans Advocate published a great article about YRNO's mission recently.

Giving Thanks: Angelle Caffery

We recently heard from Angelle Caffery, the first teacher to benefit from YRNO’s Project HOMEwork initiative back in 2010. Three years later, the art teacher at St. Mary’s Dominican High School couldn’t be more grateful. For an update on how she’s doing, click here.

And We're Thankful Too!

YRNO always appreciates financial support, and we recently received good news about new grant money coming from Bike & Build and the Edward Wisner Donation.  Merci beaucoup!
