How Secure is Your WordPress Site?
Even if you don't watch the news on a regular basis, you've more than likely heard at least one horror story about a website getting hacked. The most infamous incident of a hacked site this year has been Sony, who has sadly been the victim of numerous hacks this year, one of which included an exploit of 77 million PlayStation Network users' personal account information.

Granted, most of us aren't holding onto something of that magnitude with that much security information on the line. But just because your website doesn't have as much information that someone would want to hack into and steal, it doesn't mean that your site won't get hacked just for the fun of it. Some hackers have spiders similar to what Google and Bing use to crawl through your website, and if these hacking spiders can find a hole they can fit through, they will weave a nice little web of code just to jack with your site. Most often, it's just spam that's more annoying than anything else, but sometimes this spam can be harmful.

For example, the code could do something simple like mess up your RSS feed, or it could do something a little more subtle and damaging, such as lace some of your HTML with content that search spiders will deem to be unsuitable, thereby knocking you off your search engine ranks. Or, even worse, it could redirect your site to somewhere else all-together.

WordPress is a great little content management system that includes a free spam filter, and its updates help ensure that your site remains secure. However, realistically, there is only so much WordPress can do, especially if your site has plugins or any other add-ons that open up your site to security risks. These plugins have to be updated regularly too, especially after a WordPress update.

So here's the big question: when was the last time you checked out your WordPress site's administrative area? Here are the next questions: Do you have IT people on it regularly, making sure everything is updated each month? Do you have security plugins installed? How great is your web host at blocking unwanted IP addresses?

If you aren't sure of the answers to any of these, and you don't have an IT department either in-house or outsourced, then perhaps it is time to bring in an expert to blow the dust off of WordPress and make sure there are no cobwebs. If you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, we are always happy to help. One of our newest package/plans is strictly for monthly WordPress maintenance where we will ensure that your WordPress site is as secure as possible, and plans start as low as $187.50 a month. Improve and Increase Your WordPress Security
The world of the internet is never 100% safe. Have you ever wondered what would happen if your site got hacked? Not only does it cause errors on your page for your users, and make users not trust you, but it also causes spiders used by search engines to not trust you because of the hacked content and code.

So, what do you do?

WordPress
developers have done a great job to add security improvements to each and every release of their program, but hackers still can find holes. You need to follow these steps to improve and increase your WordPress security.

Monthly Solutions:
Tweaking Facebook
It seems like Facebook is always being tweaked, for better or for worse. Whether you love or hate Facebook's new features, there are ways to tweak Facebook to YOUR liking. Keri provided two blog posts this month explaining how to do just that. The first one, Browser Extensions for the Hater of the New Facebook, details a few interesting browser extensions for Firefox and Chrome that can help you customize your Facebook experience to look how you want it. The second post teaches how to add that finishing touch on your Facebook Fan Page: the vanity URL.

Savored Solutions!
Adoption Day 2011
For the third year in a row, we are proud to announce that we were able to contribute to Denton County's Annual Adoption Day. Denton County Adoption Day is a combined community service project of the Denton County Bar Association, CASA, and CPS to help children officially become members of their new, loving families after being removed from harmful environments. It's an incredible cause, and we love being a part of it year after year.

In addition to the posters we produce and the Facebook Page we manage, we design T-shirts for sponsors, volunteers, and the families who take part in Adoption Day.

Adoption Day is November 4, 2011. It's never too late to donate if you're interested in this noble effort.
