A message from President & CEO,
Karuna Ausman
I am pleased to welcome all students to Canada for their post-secondary journey.  Whether you have chosen a college program or the university path, your career begins now.  In Canada, our campuses and courses of study have been reimagined after months of pandemic-era education, and my hope is that you will be able to engage in a meaningful way with your peers, and cherish the interconnectedness, dialogue and rigour that many of us missed during the lockdowns.

During this upcoming year, think freely, act ethically, study with commitment, and take part in countless fulfilling activities. The more you engage with your experience, and use your study resources, recreational facilities, health and wellness initiatives, and other supports, the more successful you will be.  As your professional identity emerges, you will find yourself more present, focused on who you are, and most importantly, dedicated to doing things well and making a difference—rather than merely getting things done. Let the knowledge, discipline and abilities gained through your studies in Canada guide you in your future personal and professional lives.

Go forth and do great things!
A message from our COO, Mike Henniger

There is no time quite as exciting in international education as the fall. It is the season where students arrive on campus, international recruiters embark on business development trips, and begin planning for the following year. While this fall semester is still far from normal, there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel. At Illume, we have had the chance to visit several of our partners' campuses and experienced the energy firsthand. I have just returned from a trip to Dubai — my first since the onset of the pandemic — where I visited agent partners and met with prospective students.  They were excited to see us back in country!  I look forward to more such trips in the coming year.

As we turn our focus to 2022 and the full transition to face-to-face delivery, Illume is committed to assisting our partners in their growth and the diversification of their international student enrolments.  We are expanding our recruitment network to accomplish this mission and one key area of focus is Africa. A youthful population, growing economies, and a strong desire for quality education all make Africa a key market in which to invest over the coming decade. By the end of 2021, Illume will have 12 staff based on the continent with operations in Kenya and Nigeria.  We will use the in-country representative model to allow our clients to stand out through enhanced branding and customer service. Trent University, Mohawk College, University of the Fraser Valley, ILAC Higher Education, and Culture Works are among our partner institutions as we explore this new market.

I would like to commend all of us in international education for our hard work over the past 18 months. Our tireless efforts ensured that international students from around the world would have the opportunity to fulfill their dream of studying internationally. Their presence in classrooms across the country is a testament to that work.

I hope you have a great fall semester, and please do not hesitate to reach out and discuss your 2022 recruitment plans. We are always here to assist!

Student Sharing: University of Windsor
Name: Himaja Yedithi
Hometown: Hyderabad, India
Program: Masters of Engineering (M.Eng), Industrial Engineering
“I came to Canada from India for my Master’s in Industrial Engineering at the University of Windsor, and I have been working for Ford Motor Company of Canada in that capacity since graduation, two years ago. The university provided me with the resources I needed to secure a co-op position such as resume and cover letter services (provided by the Career Development and Experiential Learning department)interview preparation (provided by Career and Employment Services), and the Ignite Work Study program (for on-campus jobs and UWindsor’s Co-op). Coming to Windsor for my masters was my first time living away from home and family. I was a bit intimidated at first, but fortunately I found amazing friends who never let me feel homesick. My university life was either having fun with them or working on assignments. Working part-time while studying helped me gain soft skills and a sense of the Canadian work culture. As for the city of Windsor, I found it very peaceful. My advice for international students is to find a solid network of like-minded friends, especially those who make you feel close to home, and those who encourage you. Also, make sure to participate or volunteer in as many events as you can because it will allow you to connect with different people.”
Unique Programs: Pathway to University

The BC Transfer System includes many different post-secondary institutions. They offer a wide range of flexible educational pathways for students seeking the programs that best suit their particular interests and goals. Colleges offer a wide range of programs throughout the province. British Columbia has the smoothest college-to-university transfer system in Canada.

University Transfer Options at Columbia College

As a student, you can take up to 60 credits at first- and second-year level at Columbia College and then, transfer those credits to any university in British Columbia and across Canada. You will graduate with a degree from the university to which you transferred.

The advantages of studying at Columbia College’s university transfer program include:
  • Same selection of courses and quality as a university.
  • Personable and supportive instructors with weekly office hours to meet students for extra help
  • Small class sizes which allows for personal attention and a closer relationship with instructors and classmates; Students will see a higher GPA as a result.
  • Lower tuition fees for the same courses as a university.
  • Exactly the same tuition per credit, regardless of faculty.
Associate Degree

An associate degree is equivalent to the first two years of a four-year university degree. With an associate degree, you can enter into the third year of a university’s bachelor degree program.
Past Event: Pre-departure Sessions
In June and July, Illume held pre-departure sessions for students coming to study in Canada. In these sessions, key topics were covered to help the students, and their parents, understand how to navigate their university experience. These events were greatly appreciated by the agents, students and their families in attendance. The interactions were lively with lots of participation as Karuna Ausman, Illume CEO, acted as moderator, and also covered some of the topics along with the representatives from our partner institutions.

The Topics
  1. Living in Canada: how to set up a bank account, transportation (bus routes/getting a pass), off campus housing, how to access healthcare if required (on/off campus), insurance;
  2. Computing skills and technology: expectations regarding knowledge (Word, Google docs, Excel, etc); writing a proper email to professors (formal language skills and expectations), calculators (what is allowed in Canadian programs);
  3. Academic integrity and referencing: proper citation formats (APA, MLA), academic integrity and what counts as plagiarism; how to work in groups/dynamics; availing oneself of TA hours;
  4. Campus services: setting up email and IT accounts (Brightspace, Moodle, etc.), working with library researchers to help find materials, research skills for online journal databases, finding appropriate relevant/recent citations;
  5. IRCC information: working on vs off campus; ensuring study permit and visa information is up to date; transfer of institutions or programs (what is allowed and what is not);
  6. Covid precautions and expectations in Canada for Fall 2021: protocols in public, laws, good practices and courtesy; where to look for governmental updates (federal, provincial);
  7. Pre-departure items: what to bring to Canada and what is not necessary (certain clothing per climate, technology including voltage differences with devices, etc.), what items cannot be brought into the country, cultural items are available in Canada (foods etc.), what to expect on landing in Canada in terms of airport arrival.
