    Hostos Center for Arts & Culture at Hostos Community College in the Bronx is looking for a strategic leader to serve as its new director.

  • Centro Kicks Off Tour of New Pura Belpré Book

    Centro is on a national tour with its new book, The Stories I Read to the Children: The Life and Writing of Pura Belpré, the Legendary Storyteller, Children’s Author, and New York Public Librarian. The first stop: Puerto Rico.

    “We’re pleased to kickoff the book tour in Puerto Rico,” said Noraliz Ruiz, Centro publications coordinator. “It’s very significant to celebrate and commemorate the life and career of Pura Belpré (1899-1982) on the island, particularly during the celebration of Library Week.

    Breaking Ground: Anthology of Puerto Rican Women Writers in New York 1980-2012

    The anthology presents a spectrum of poetry, poetic prose and fiction by 46 Puerto Rican women writers in New York, documenting their activism and offering a glimpse into their roles in the artistic, social, political and intellectual history of New York’s communities.

    Lisa Sánchez González has always considered librarians her heroes, so it is not surprising she was drawn to Pura Belpré, (1899-1982), the first Puerto Rican and Latina librarian at the New York Public Library (NYPL), as the subject for a book. She will discuss this new book, The Stories I Read to the Children: The Life and Writing of Pura Belpré.

  • The Frank Bonilla Fellowship

    The Frank Bonilla Fellowship Fund supports the advancement of the field of Puerto Rican Studies in honor of his legacy. The purpose of the fund is to identify and select undergraduate and graduate students who express a strong interest in Puerto Rican Studies and to support their research in this field. Frank Bonilla Fellows receive a $500 stipend. Undergraduate applications are still being accepted.

  • Professional Research and Archive Staff

    Centro has two positions available for research associates to conduct academic research in connection with CUNY programs. A PhD is required.

    A new library archivist position is now available.

    There are also two positions available for research assistants (econometrics specialist) to provide research and organizational support to Centro’s director. Research projects will focus on the study and interpretation of the social conditions of the Puerto Rican community in the United States.
