  • Centro Seeks Partners for Historical Preservation and Research Partnership Program

    Centro will provide limited funding for partners to collect archival material, conduct research and disseminate information as part of its Historical Preservation and Research Partnership Program for fall 2013-spring 2014. Centro seeks proposals from historians and researchers for projects that develop and collect data and/or analyze existing or new materials.

    Centro Loses a Great Friend

    Centro mourns the loss of Tato Laviera, the beloved “chronicler of life in El Barrio,” one of the most notable figures in the Nuyorican poetry movement, and a longtime friend of Centro.

    We are grateful to him for his contributions as a writer, poet, playwright and humanitarian as well as for a lifetime of dedication to the Puerto Rican community. He will be remembered and his work will be studied for generations to come.

  • Famed Nuyorican Poet’s Collection
    In Centro Archives

    Centro is pleased to be the home of the papers of literary icon and community champion Tato Laviera, who died November 1. The Laviera Collection will join with those of other key Puerto Rican literary figures including Clemente Soto Vélez, Pedro Pietri, Ed Vega Yunque and Pura Belpré, to enrich the holdings of the famed Centro Archives.

  • Centro Exhibit Travels to Loisaida


    After a successful run in the lobby of the Hunter College Silberman School of Social Work in East Harlem as part of Centro’s 40th anniversary events, Centro’s Posters on the Wall: Our Nuyorican Story exhibit is soon traveling downtown.

    The exhibit, which showcases posters from Centro’s graphic art collection and highlights the diverse work of Puerto Rican artists from the 1960s through the 1990s, will open November 14 at the Abrazo Interno Gallery, Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Educational Center, 107 Suffolk Street.

    Centro is co-sponsoring the downtown exhibit with the Society of the Educational Arts, Inc. (SEA) and Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Educational Center.

    Gilberto Gerena Valentín Memoir
    Now Available in English


    Centro’s new book , Gilberto Gerena Valentín: My Life as a Community Activist, Labor Organizer, and Progressive Politician in New York City, is now available in an English translation by Andrew Hurley, professor emeritus at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras.

  • Centro's New Educational Tool
    Highlights Puerto Rican Heritage

    Centro’s new Puerto Rican Heritage Poster Series, a collection of five large posters provide a brief historical chronology of Puerto Ricans in the United States and three historical and demographic maps that pictorially reflect Puerto Rican migration. As part of Centro’s Traveling Exhibits program, the posters are available to educational and not-for-profit organizations free as a traveling exhibit. The posters are also available for sale to the general public.

    This rich eight-poster heritage series is designed to provide an attractive visual educational tool for teachers and others to use in classrooms or other public spaces, and to introduce students to and interest them in this significant piece of Puerto Rican and American history.
