Citizenship Symposium :
Details and Schedule Released
Centro is very pleased to announce the full schedule of this month’s symposium on 100 years of U.S. citizenship for Puerto Ricans. The two-day event will examine the history and legacy of the collective naturalization of Puerto Ricans as United States citizens. The collective naturalization provision of the Jones Act, which granted U.S. citizenship to Puerto Ricans, not only departed from all prior precedents, but also established a new precedent for the extension of citizenship to annexed territories.
The symposium will welcome an impressive array of scholars and activists, who will put the 100th anniversary of the Jones Act in its historical, social, and contemporary contexts. Keynote addresses will be delivered on Thursday by the Honorable Judge Juan Torruella of the U.S. First Circuit Court of Appeals and Friday by Rogers Smith, Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Associate Dean for the Social Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania.
A complete schedule of addresses and panels, along with abstracts and biographies of the participants, is now available here.
The event is free and open to the public, but to guarantee your space, you should RSVP here.
