Centro Library and Archives Awarded Grant to Process Two Collections of Pioneering Puerto Rican Women

Centro was recently awarded a $14k grant in order to process two collections from a pair of trailblazing Puerto Rican women: Olga Mendez and Elba Cabrera. Each of them aimed to ignite change within the political, social and cultural spheres. The award is a Documentary Heritage Program grant from the New York State Archives, which is a unit of the New York State Education Department. It will allow for the hiring of archival staff and further processing of the two collections in order to make them available to the public.

Millennium Book Tour Goes to MA

On October 31, Centro’s director and co-editor of Puerto Ricans at the Dawn of the New Millennium Edwin Meléndez will be making the second appearance of a series of book presentations at the Holyoke Public Library in Holyoke, Mass. The Millennium book tour is one of the outreach initiatives aimed at projecting Centro’s research and resources beyond the New York area. “New communities are being established, and older ones are growing, all over the U.S.,” Meléndez said. “Centro was born to serve all stateside Puerto Ricans, and as they disperse we must find ways of bringing our services, including research like this, to them wherever they are.”
