Centro Joins CUNY Dominican Studies Institute
    In Major Research Project

As of 2012, Puerto Ricans and Dominicans accounted for 57% of New York City’s 2.4 million Hispanic population. Given their numbers, said Edwin Meléndez, director of the Center for Puerto Rican Studies (Centro), “what we observe is that in the political system the focus has not reflected that fact.”

To raise the profile of this majority force, Professor Meléndez and Professor Ramona Hernández, director of the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute (CUNY DSI), have joined forces to investigate common difficulties in their constituencies and find common strategies to influence the political system. The goal is to challenge the political system into ameliorating these economic, social and educational barriers.

  • Encore for Centro Voices E-Magazine

Given the great reception the first edition of the new e-magazine Centro Voices garnered – with over 7,000 pageviews and lots of Likes and Shares on social media– Centro has set ourselves a high standard to meet; and we meet it we do in our second edition, available online Wednesday, September 17. It is as vibrant, interesting and as good a read as our first. You won’t want to miss it.

We kick off with Aurora Flores’ probing, honest and very, very funny piece “Facing the Music: Writing Larry Harlow El Judío Maravilloso,” about the irrepressible salsa mainstay Larry Harlow. Flores takes us on a journey from the ordinary Brooklyn Jewish community where Harlow was born – thus the moniker El Judío Maravilloso – to his initiation into the Latin sounds of el barrio, across the sea to Cuba and back to New York and music stardom, up to his rain-soaked recent performance of his opera Hommy this summer at Lincoln Center Out of Doors.

Come Meet Centro and Find Your Center

Come to the fall student Open House and learn from the Centro staff about all the opportunities available at Centro for Hunter students, including internships, work study and volunteering in the areas such as research, library data, statistics, communications, marketing and media.

Along with those in Puerto Rican studies, Centro offers opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in a wider spectrum of disciplines. Our publications coordinator, Noraliz Ruiz, shared some exciting news: “We are looking for students interested in journalism because we just launched Centro Voices (our re-imagined bi-monthly e-magazine) and we need students to get involved with this exciting new project. We will be looking for writers, web and layout assistants, and graphic designers.”
