    A Great Success

With more Puerto Ricans living in the United States than in Puerto Rico, Centro’s role as the preeminent institution dedicated to understanding, preserving and sharing the Puerto Rican experience in the United States must grow substantially

As Dennis Rivera, Centro advisory board chair and nationally well-known labor leader, noted at Centro’s 40th anniversary celebration, “Being active in Centro is being proud of our heritage, being proud of our culture, being proud of being Puerto Rican and making the world know who we are as a people.”

  • Congressman Luis Gutierrez Visits Centro to Discuss His New Memoir

In his new memoir, Still Dreaming: My Journey from the Barrio to Capitol Hill , Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) recounts his life between two worlds: as a Puerto Rican in America, where he was born yet where he was told to "go back to where you came from" and as an “American” in Puerto Rico, where he says he was ridiculed as a "gringo" who couldn’t speak Spanish. For much of his early life he seemed like the last person who would rise to national prominence, yet today he is one of the most recognized Puerto Rican leaders in the country.
