Centro Releases New Puerto Rican Civic and Political Participation Research Brief

The levels of political involvement of the Puerto Rican population in the United States has historically been lower than the population as a whole and relative to non-Hispanic whites in particular.

A new research brief titled “Puerto Rican Civic and Political Participation at the Turn of the 21st Century” by Carlos Vargas-Ramos, research associate at Centro, takes a closer look at the Puerto Rican population and its political and civic engagement and offers several explanations for this lower level of participation as a group. While Puerto Ricans in the United States have made great strides in the political arena, with representatives in the United States Congress and scores of state legislators, mayors and municipal legislators throughout the country, they continue to be unequal participants in the political process.
