Reflecting on Centro’s Past with an Eye to the Future

With the 40th anniversary of Centro fast approaching, Edwin Meléndez, Centro director, has released a presentation titled “The Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College, CUNY,” which takes a closer look at Centro’s mission, vision and history, where we are today, and where we go from here.

As part of Centro’s milestone in 2013, Meléndez said the organization is planning a lineup of activities. More importantly, he said, there will be a yearlong discussion focusing on Centro’s future at a time when many administrators at universities throughout the country question the value of Puerto Rican Studies. He poses this question: “What could be Centro’s role for the next 40 years?”

    Centro Films and Research at
    Puerto Rican Studies Conference

Centro hosted a series of activities ranging from film exhibits to roundtable discussions and panels on politics, education and Puerto Rican history as part of the Puerto Rican Studies Association’s (PRSA) Tenth Biennial Conference. The theme for the conference, which was held October 24-28 at the University of Albany, State University of New York – SUNY, was "Boricuas and Other Border Crossers of Diaspora and Latinidades."

“PRSA was one of the best attended in recent years,” said Edwin Meléndez, Centro director. “This was a show of force when we most need it. Ethnic Studies in general and Puerto Rican Studies in particular are under great scrutiny at universities across the country given both the rise of conservatism that questions its relevancy and the budget cuts that are making it much harder for our programs to succeed"
