Previous government's BC Hydro contracts to cost ratepayers billions
A report on BC’s independent power industry reveals that sweetheart deals made by the BC Liberals will cost British Columbians a staggering $16.2 billion over 20 years. As the BC Liberals signed these deals, the independent power industry filled BC Liberal campaign coffers to the tune of $3 million between 2005 and 2017. BC didn't benefit. BC Hydro customers didn't benefit, but a small number of well-placed independent power producers (IPP) did. New Democrat MLAs have raised concerns about the BC Liberals' IPP contracts for more than a decade. Now it’s our job to fix the mess and make sure BC Hydro works better for its customers. READ MORE
BC NDP Budget invests in opportunities for Kootenay people
Our government is doing things differently by investing in people while balancing the budget and growing the economy at the same time. We are making sure people have the skills they need to succeed by investing in education, training and skills recognition and, as of Feb 19, students will no longer be paying interest on their BC student loans! We will be fully eliminating MSP premiums on Jan. 1, 2020, saving families as much as $1,800 per year. We will be providing over $902 million for CleanBC, putting B.C. on the path to a cleaner, brighter, low-carbon future. This will reduce air pollution and save families money through my ministry’s Clean Energy Vehicle Program, incentives for energy-saving home improvements, and programs to help communities transition to cleaner energy sources. We’re making life better for people right here in the Kootenays and across the province with this and so much more.

Government commitment to get rid of dirty money
It is shocking that the previous government intentionally ignored the problem of money laundering for years in spite of repeated warnings. I’ve been hearing from people who are interested in a public inquiry. We have not ruled that out, but our first priority is to put a stop to the organized crime activity taking place. We’ve already
introduced changes that have produced a significant drop in suspicious cash transactions and ramped up our regulatory presence at casinos.
While a public inquiry is good for identifying those who enabled this activity, we can move far more quickly to close loopholes and stop ongoing activity with the reviews that are underway. The two reports on money laundering in luxury cars and real estate are due on March 30th. These reports should give us the information we need to make further decisions about next steps, including decisions about whether to move forward with a public inquiry.
Province provides $20 Million to implement ‘Mining Jobs Task Force’ recommendations
As Minister for Energy, Mines & Petroleum Resources, I'm very proud to acknowledge the work done by our government’s
BC Mining Jobs Task Force and to start implementing their recommendations. We are funding a new division in the ministry to strengthen health, safety and the enforcement of environmental protections. With $20million, we are doubling the number of boots on the ground working for our communities. We are also adding new resources to ensure this foundational economic driver remains competitive in a global market place so that it can continue to provide good family-supporting jobs here in the Kootenays and throughout B.C.
Other recommendations from the task force include a plan to attract and retain women in mining, co-ordination with CleanBC, and reviewing economic partnerships with Indigenous communities. The
task force's recommendations show what we can accomplish when we work together to build a better B.C.
