Please join me for my annual Holiday Community Lunch, Wednesday December 19th at Our Daily Bread, 520 Falls St. Nelson.

Delivering on Affordable Housing
Over the past 16 months, we’ve taken unprecedented action and made historic investments to make a difference in the lives of the people of BC. In the fall, government delivered on major commitments, including announcing 4,900 new affordable mixed income rental homes - the first of 14,000 for mixed- and middle-income people and families throughout B.C. The homes are part of the largest investment in housing affordability in B.C.'s history - more than $7 billion over 10 years. Our own Nelson Cares Society was given a $4.5 million grant to provide an estimated 45 new rental units.
Delivering on childcare
As part of a $1-billion investment over three years to deliver low-cost, quality and affordable child care, government launched 53 prototype projects around the province to deliver child care that will cost families a maximum of $200 per month per child. I was happy to announce that The School House Early Care and Learning Centre in Nelson applied for and was chosen to be part of this pilot program. We also announced a new benefit to help 60,000 more families lower monthly child care costs.
Zero Emissions by 2040
As the Minister of Energy Mines & Petroleum Resources I was so excited to announce that we will introduce legislation next spring to phase in targets for the sale of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). This legislation will set targets of 10% ZEV sales by 2025, 30% by 2030, and 100% by 2040, while government will take additional steps to make ZEVs more affordable.
On Nov 19th I introduced Bill 56, the Oil and Gas Activities Amendment Act. This bill seeks to reduce our natural gas sector’s methane emissions by 45%, therefore reducing our impact on climate change.
We’re also protecting our wildlife habitat with this bill. Government will now require oil and gas operators to mitigate activities and impacts to habitat within their operating area by treating and monitoring an area located outside of the operating area but more critical to wildlife habitat or First Nations’ traditional use. Most notably, this will be important in our work saving caribou herds.
Congratulations to Children’s World Learning Centre for earning the Province’s Child Care Legacy Award as part of the 2018 Child Care Awards of Excellence program. It was so lovely to join the children and staff for a tea party to celebrate with them. Way to go on 40 years of service to our community!
