Newsletter Summer 2013

With the recent spate of weather we've had, we have to agree with Henry James who said: “Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.” ... Well, that and "beer please"...!

There's something about being able to sit outside and eat on a light, warm summer evening that makes you feel happy. Plus it always bodes well for holidays...

And here in Glasgow, the start of the XX Commonwealth Games is nigh and the city is starting to get a buzz with excitement and Games preparations. The summer is shaping up nicely!

Hopefully some of you will be able to come and join in the Games celebrations and see the city at it's best. If you do, and have time to meet up, make sure and email as we'd like to say hello!

The Fistral team hope that whatever your plans are for the summer, they're enjoyable.

Leadership and Team Building for Space
Rosie recently delivered a Leadership course for LSE Space in Wessling, Germany supporting their new and upcoming leaders working in the Space Industry.

The aim of the course was to embed an understanding of the methods and theory of team working and team leadership, but with a focus on hands-on exercises, practical application of takeaway techniques to improve future team leadership.

The applicable nature of the course was well received:

  • "Efficient, useful, relevant."
  • "A lot of fun. Great training to learn about different leadership styles."
  • "Great! I learned a lot about myself."
  • "One of the best from the whole [company] training! Thanks for it."

Fistral to attend Vitae RDIC 2014
Pauline has now booked her early-bird spot at the Vitae Researcher Development International Conference 2014, in the Manchester Midlands Hotel Tues 9th and Wed 10th September 2014.

Conference themes this year link to: policy developments, building institutional capacity, demonstrating value, and sustainable practice. Visit the Vitae RDIC 2014 website for more info. The workshops deadline has passed, but the Special Interest Session proposal deadline is Friday 11th July 2014.

Pauline's looking forward to seeing many colleagues there and, as is quickly becoming traditional, she will be in the bar before the main conference dinner on Tues 9th to buy some drinks and say hello to friends new and old.

If you still want to take advantage of the early bird rate, be sure to book by 16th July 2014. See the Vitae booking form link for more info.
Who, for those of you who don't know, "Is a busker's cat". And recently, Fraser was on stage as 'The Thief' in Tabby McTat by Julia Donaldson - he "eyed it he spied it he ran".

If you have kids and haven't read this yet, it comes second only (in his opinion) to "The Snail and the Whale" - another great book by the previous Children's Laureate.

Julia Donaldson, from Glasgow, also wrote many other great poems including: "The Gruffalo" series, "Tyrannosaurus Drip", "Room on the Broom", "Tiddler", and "Zog".

Apart from recommendations, here's a shot of Fraser hand-picked by Julia to star as the thief [he couldn't have shaved that day!] during the Aye Write Book Festival earlier this year.
