Republic: campaigning for a democratic alternative to the monarchy
Dear Supporter
  • Did you know that prince Charles has the power to veto and change laws before parliament gets to debate them?
  • Did you know that Charles receives over £18m a year from land that he doesn't own, money that should be spent on public services?
  • Did you know that Charles is exempt from Freedom of Information laws, which means he can lobby our elected politicians without any of us ever finding out?
It's time Charles was stopped.  The key to his lobbying and his lavish lifestyle is the Duchy of Cornwall, a large landed estate and property portfolio that parliament makes available to the heir to the throne.  The Duchy is not the personal property of Charles or his mother, it rightly belongs to the nation.

That's why Republic is about to launch a new campaign to have the Duchy abolished, to clip the wings of the meddling prince and challenge one of the monarchy's key privileges.

Here are the details of the launch meeting of Republic's Duchy Campaign:

Saturday, September 29
1:30 pm – 4:00 pm
Truro Community Library
Union Place
Truro TR1 1EP

I'm keen to hear from supporters in Cornwall and from around the UK, and that's why I'll be hosting the launch meeting in Truro before taking the campaign around the country.

The Duchy has a particular impact in Cornwall itself and so I want to hear Cornish views on what that impact is and how we can best tackle this campaign.  In particular we need to be clear about what happens to Duchy land: should it be gifted to Cornwall, split up and sold to tennants and new owners or handed to parliament?

Challenging the prince's power

As well as demanding the end of the Duchy we'll also be challenging prince Charles's power of veto over legislation and calling for the royals to be included in the Freedom of Information Act.  More news on these campaigns will be announced over the coming weeks.

There's much more going on

Events are continuing to be organised around the country.  Tomorrow we're holding our Local Action Day, next week I'll be joined by Kerry McCarthy MP in meeting with supporters in Bristol and the following day I'll be out campaigning with members in Taunton.
