Hello All, I hope you are all well.
It’s been a busy week since the last newsletter. We’ve had lots of customers in the shop, and some lovely compliments about how bright and airy - and even how much larger it seems that be, thank you all for your kind words. It’s been really nice to be able to chat properly to customers, instead of just waving. Customers have been very patient, but we’ve not had more than one or two people waiting.
The last couple of newsletters have focussed on food suppliers, this week is the turn of the makers of the craft items.
Many of you who’ve been into the shop will have met Linda Bean. She looks after the shop if I need any time away from it. She’s also an expert seamstress and knitter. In the shop at the moment we have a number of her doorstops, cushions, dresses for little girls and her fabulous aprons. Linda will take on commissions if you’d like anything in a particular design or colour.
Kata Magee is based in St Neots and makes her own natural soaps, face scrubs and shampoo bars. They really are lovely to use and very reasonably priced.
Jim Francis is based in Great Barford and created his own animal and bird based ornaments. They are made in clay, then moulds are made, either the final casts generally using pewter. We only have a small number of the items he makes, so again please ask if you are after something in particular.
Mandy Digby (Handmade with Love and Sparkle) is based in Biggleswade and specialises in items made from recycled materials. Her most popular items are the recycled wine bottles with die cut messages on and fairy lights inside. She is also starting to make (ready for winter which is she’s away) mittens from recycled jumpers.
Louise Bailey from Tip Top is based in Wyboston. She makes carrier bags, makeup pouches, coin purses and makeup remover pads that can be washed and reused.

Veg: new and baking potatoes, loose and bunched carrots, bunched beetroot, hispi cabbages, broad beans, red and white onions, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, garlic, mushrooms, spinach, broccoli, aubergines, chillies (Fresno and Jalapeno) and courgettes. Sadly, Asparagus has now finished.
Salads: little gem lettuce, cucumber (large and small), tomatoes, celery, salad onions, rocket.
Fruit: eating apples, Bramley apples, rhubarb, William pears and best of all – English Strawberries.
Recipe of the week
We get our chillies from Edible Ornamentals in Chawston, less than a mile from the shop. Jalapeno’s are plentiful at the moment and this is a great way to have them. Be aware, they are mostly mild, but you can get an occasional hot one.
Bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers
Stuffed with oozing cheese and wrapped in bacon, these spicy jalapeño chilli bites will go down a storm at a party.
20 fat green jalapeño chillies
150g cream cheese
75g mozzarella, chopped into chunks
20g parmesan, grated
10 rashers smoked streaky bacon
dips, to serve
- Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Cut a slit in each chilli from top to bottom and scoop out the seeds and white pith with a teaspoon. Mash the cheeses together with some seasoning and stuff the mixture into the chillies.
- Halve each slice of bacon and wrap a piece around each chilli. Cook for 35-40 mins until the bacon is crisp. Serve with your favourite dips and beware – some of the chillies will be spicier than others!
