Compiance Monitors Motivate Scoliosis Brace Wear

In “Bracing the Curve” in the April issue of The O&P EDGE, we hear from experts about the best ways to treat scoliosis. “The question in treating scoliosis is not whether to brace, but rather how to do it effectively while keeping the patient comfortable and motivated enough to continue through many hours of bracing,” they told us.

When it comes to bracing for scoliosis, the literature says that there are better outcomes the more time a patient spends wearing a brace. The hard part is ensuring that the patient actually wears the device for all those hours. Unfortunately, trusting the patients to self-report their time wearing the brace has proven to be unreliable. This Online Exclusive discusses how compliance monitors are becoming a part of scoliosis bracing treatment.

ROMP Recognizes Limb Loss Awareness Month with Donation Drive

To recognize Limb Loss Awareness Month, Denver-based Range of Motion Project (ROMP) is holding a drive to collect used and gently used prosthetic devices.

The collection program—Components for a Cause—will be held throughout the month and across the nation, said Nicole Ver Kuilen, associate director of development for ROMP. “April is Limb Loss Awareness month and it’s critical we acknowledge the fact that nine out of ten amputees worldwide do not have access to prosthetic care,” she said. “This month, we can do something about that.”

The O&P EDGE caught up with Ver Kuilen to get her perspective on what makes this drive and recognizing Limb Loss Awareness month a special event for not only the limb loss community in the United States, but also around the world, especially in less resourced countries. MORE
