'Movers and Shakers' Newsletter

Summer 2016

No. 45

Whilst much has been written about the referendum decision to leave the EU, and the impact is still very unclear, we thought it would be helpful to summarise how the decision could affect the media business as a whole in this month’s newsletter. We’ve curated some of the most interesting articles we’ve read to give us some indication of what’s in store for the UK. We'll watch the situation very carefully and monitor any changes as we see them.

We’ve been working closely with our Associates at Lewis Silkin too, who have summarised some of the key possible impacts from an employment law point of view. The key message is ‘Don’t panic’ – things won’t change overnight. Most recent reports from the Bank of England say that there are no signs of a sharp economic slowdown and companies are not yet cutting down on hiring. We'll have to wait and see.

On a more positive note, it’s been a busy summer for Lumina with some interesting searches spanning both media and the arts. It’s very much ‘business as usual’ – and we look forward to some exciting new searches in the Autumn too.

Congratulations to David Williams also who has recently joined Keshet UK, more of which below.

For those of you who aren't familiar with this report, it’s brought to you as a useful service to keep you up to date with the ever-revolving door. Here at Lumina, it’s our business to know who is where - and since we’re collecting this information anyway, we’re happy to share it with you, free of charge. All contributions welcomed.

Annual HR Forum: A Great Place to Work
How valuing diversity and the wider community makes business sense

At the end of April we held our 10th HR Forum at the historic and recently-reopened Regent Street Cinema in Oxford Circus.

Over the course of the day, we gained a unique insight into a variety of different organisations such as UKTV, BBC Digital, Netflix, and Turner, with Russell Brimelow from Lewis Silkin offering expertise on the latest Employment topics in the Media sector. These companies offered differing approaches to diversity in the workforce, with the widely-echoed view that proactive access and support allows companies to flourish creatively and commercially. Also, a diverse and engaged workforce not only has positive effects for the company, but on a global scale too.
