'Movers and Shakers' Newsletter

December 2015

No. 43
This  Autumn has flown for us and as we go to press there is still an exciting ‘buzz’ about the state of the industry with unprecedented levels of activity amongst  our clients.

Alastair Waddington  and myself have been busy meeting many old and new clients and discussing  their business plans for the forthcoming year. It’s been a fascinating time and with our new consulting service now up and running, we can add even more value to clients’ businesses.

As well as our ongoing UK and international searches, we’ve found time to attend several of the recent RTS events which  as patron members we are very keen to support. We’ve included a couple of short reports here. Thanks too to Lewis Silkin LLP for being our partners in a number of high profile networking events – one of which has been held in October.

We’d also like to welcome on board Jo Parkinson and Shane Murphy as the Movers of the Month.

Finally it remains to say ( in as many ways as we can) we’d like to extend good wishes to everyone for this festive time of year and all the very best for 2016.

For those of you who aren't familiar with this report, it’s brought to you as a useful service to keep you up to date with the ever-revolving door. Here at Lumina, it’s our business to know who is where - and since we’re collecting this information anyway, we’re happy to share it with you each month, free of charge. All contributions welcomed.

A rare opportunity to shape the future of UK content and media policy.

Ofcom is the communications regulator in the UK with responsibility for  the TV and radio sectors, fixed line telecoms, mobiles, postal services, and the airwaves over which wireless devices operate.

As the communications sector goes through significant change and convergence, Ofcom seeks a uniquely talented senior executive to lead and develop the new Content & Media Policy group . This is a senior management role and will report directly to the Chief Executive, Sharon White.

Protecting your Company in the Digital Age
Breakfast Briefing with Lewis Silkin at the Soho Hotel

On the 15th of October we hosted a breakfast meeting at the stylish Sandra Blow room in the Soho Hotel with our friends at Lewis Silkin LLP. After catching up with delegates from Endemol Shine, Keshet International, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Channel 4 and many others over an elegant buffet breakfast, we sat down to discuss how to protect your company in the digital age, a pressing issue for media companies and media recruiters like us.

The discussions were led by two partners at Lewis Silkin, Russell Brimelow and Richard Miskella, and ranged from contractual issues in the media workplace, how to promote positive use of social media and protect your company’s reputation and client base, to how to safeguard confidential information and monitor digital communication.

Feedback from our guests was extremely positive, with praise for the organisation and guestlist, and the fabulous venue made a great impression. Russell and Richard facilitated an open and interesting debate on the subject matter, with entertaining introductions from our own Alastair Waddington and Anne Fenton.

On-Demand & In Demand
Lumina has worked recently in Subscription-Video-On-Demand – a vast and ever-growing market that continues to have a profound impact on the entertainment industry and the habits and expectations of audiences.  As Netflix forecasts a global subscriber base of 115 million by 2020, and Amazon Prime continues to refine its features by offering offline viewing and rapidly building on its vast library of content, the growing power that SVOD yields is certainly difficult to ignore.
RTS Convention 2015
Happy Valley or House of Cards?
September saw Lumina attend the prestigious Royal Television Society Convention in Cambridge – this year entitled: Happy Valley or House of Cards? The event, as always, hosted a range of impressive panel discussions to shed light on a vast array of industry debates and developments.
"The Inside Voice" Panel Discussion
at the BBC
On the 18th of November, we were invited to the RTS-sponsored event “the Inside Voice”, a panel discussion at the BBC with the social media team behind everyone’s favourite Saturday Night show, the Voice UK.

Muki Kulhan, the Executive Digital Producer of the Voice UK chaired, while Sarah Clay, the BBC Commissioning Editor for iPlayer & Entertainment was on hand to explain how the BBC handles its social media strategies for shows like the Apprentice and Strictly Come Dancing as well as the Voice. David Levin, the founder of ThatLot and chief “Voice Tweeter” treated us to a selection of the most popular collaborations between the social media crew and the Voice Coaches, and Glenn Miller, the Head of Entertainment EMEA at Facebook gave us a taster of how Facebook is a useful tool for shows like the Voice in reaching out to their audiences.
