Movers & Shakers Report - February / March 2014

'Movers and Shakers' Newsletter

February / March 2014

No. 37

This month’s issue highlights film, but also serves as a (slightly belated) year opener for 2014. Last year closed on a strong note for us, with the placement of ITN's CTO (this month's Mover of the Month, Bevan Gibson).

It was a busy year for Lumina, with more roles undertaken than any other year before, in regions as diverse as Sweden, Qatar and Luxembourg. We witnessed a turnaround in the employment market, with many companies starting to think about expansion again. If recent surveys are to be believed 2014 will prove even more active. We have certainly observed increased interest in movement and change from candidates.

As well as our regular features. we also take this first newsletter of the year to introduce a new business sector, 'Lumina Digital.'

Lastly, for those of you who aren't familiar with this report, it’s brought to you as a useful service to keep you up to date with the ever-revolving door. Here at Lumina, it’s our business to know who is where - and since we’re collecting this information anyway, we’re happy to share it with you each month, free of charge.

As ever, we request your contributions to the issues raised in this newsletter..

The Year in Film:
Tax Reliefs & Inward Investment

The BFI’s recent annual statistical offload revealed just over £1bn of expenditure on British productions in 2013, a 14% increase on the previous year’s figure. Though undoubtedly an encouraging figure, it is debatable just how accurate it would be to describe it as a success for British filmmaking. 81% of this billion spend came from inward investment.

Is Hollywood's influence overshadowing British film production?

The Year in Film:
British Visual Effects

UK VFX took in almost £200m in 2012/13 – a figure which is expected to grow to £600m in 2014, as the gravitas of Gravity attracts more interest in the burgeoning London VFX scene, and film production tax breaks expand and continue to benefit British effects work and filmmaking in general.

With this in mind, we look briefly at the growth of British VFX, and the problems it faces.
