Spring 2016

No. 44

With Easter now a fading memory we look forward to a very busy few months.

Our annual HR Forum takes place this month with a packed line-up of speakers at a new prestigious venue in Regent Street. Our topic, ‘valuing diversity and the wider community', seems to have struck a chord with places being filled fast.

We’re fortunate to have Darren Childs, CEO of UK TV as our keynote speaker. UK TV is the first broadcaster ever to be named as one of the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work for – and he will be sharing his secrets with Pat Younge (Sugar Films) who is kindly chairing this session. We also have speakers from Netflix, Turner, BBC and others still to be announced.

Thanks go to all our sponsors and speakers who have been involved in organising this with us.

For those of you who aren't familiar with this report, it’s brought to you as a useful service to keep you up to date with the ever-revolving door. Here at Lumina, it’s our business to know who is where - and since we’re collecting this information anyway, we’re happy to share it with you each month, free of charge. All contributions welcomed.

A Morning With... Sarah Wright
Sarah Wright, Director of Acquisitions at Sky TV
Spring was in the air and the daffodils were in bloom at the Osterley campus where we met Sarah Wright. Bubbly, engaging and very knowledgeable about all things content – her passion shines through as does her encyclopaedic knowledge of international TV series. Sarah certainly has her finger on the pulse when  it comes to understanding what programmes viewers will switch on for.

Her recent promotion to Director of Acquisitions at Sky TV represents another upward step for Sarah which has seen her work for three leading UK broadcasters: the BBC, UK TV and now Sky.

HR Forum 2016
A Great Place To Work: How Valuing Diversity and the Wider Community Makes Business Sense
The Regent Street Cinema, University of Westminster
We're pleased to announce the annual HR Forum we're organising with our sister company Searchlight on 28th April at the newly-refurbished Regent Street Cinema at the University of Westminster. This historic venue in the art deco style is often described as "the birthplace of British film", as in 1896 the Lumière brothers’ Cinématographe was first presented to a paying audience, making it the first place in Britain to show moving pictures.

Our programme will examine the importance of diversity within organisations, and the positive impact this has on both internal and external communities. Within this remit, we’ll also look at performance management and corporate social responsibility, as well as have an update on the latest employment legislation. We have speakers confirmed from UKTV, Netflix, Turner Broadcasting and Lewis Silkin, amongst others.

This is a complimentary event for those working in HR in the Media & Entertainment sectors – or for those with some HR responsibilities who would like to expand their knowledge. Early booking is recommended; to enquire about places, or for additional information, please contact us at hrforum@searchlight.com by 18th April.

C Level Networking Evening at the Shard

At the end of January we hosted a C Level Networking Dinner kindly sponsored by our clients at Prime Focus Technologies. It took place at the fabulous Hutong on the 33rd floor of the Shard. Senior Executives from Lionsgate, Arts Alliance Media, MTG World, Netflix, IMG, NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures, and many other organisations attended, and some very insightful conversations were had.

The menu was delightful and modern, with a whole Roasted Peking Duck carved at the table by the chefs. The red lanterns suspended from the ceiling as a Chinese symbol of celebration and the striking flower arrangements made for an warm, intimate ambience which contrasted beautifully with the stunning panoramic views of London.

A big thank you to all our guests and our friends at Prime Focus, and to the Hutong Private Dining team. Their cocktails weren’t bad either!

Unleash the Niche: The Rise of Genre-Specific SVODs
As the BBC and ITV hold discussions to launch a Netflix-style streaming service, and Thinkbox reveals that UK SVOD viewing nearly doubled in 2015, it is clear that enjoying our content on demand has become very much the norm. And while streaming giants such as Netflix and Amazon offer a broad range of movies and popular series, the industry is now seeing a rise in niche SVOD services. Media companies are eager to test audience willingness to pay for specific types of content, and viewers have been happy to oblige.
