5th Anniversary Edition

February/March 2013 no. 32

This edition sees a milestone for Lumina Search. In the five years since our existence in early 2008, we have seen the fortunes of many companies in the UK and Europe dip dramatically with the implications this has for business growth and risk-taking amongst boards and Executive Management teams.

However despite the doom and gloom, we are pleased to report that that, Lumina has offered Executive Search and consultancy services to over 35 well-known organisations in the Media and Entertainment sector in a variety of roles from CEO to VP level with many blue chip companies such as Disney, Viacom, ITN, Warner Bros, UPC and BBC.

Finding the right high calibre leaders to move Media companies forward has never been more challenging. The most important characteristic for business leaders in Europe in 2012 according to a recent Survey by Korn Ferry is the ability to deal with ambiguity - a trait that didn't even make the top ten five years ago. See the article here.

Leadership alone is not enough without a fully committed workforce and we’re pleased to preview our upcoming annual Searchlight Group HR Forum on the topic of Employee Engagement.
How do you keep your staff motivated when high salary increases and bonuses are a thing of the past? The business case for Employee Engagement is simple. Archie Norman, the chairman of ITV, described employee engagement as the ‘struggle’ against the management philosophy that placed productivity and the measurement of inputs and outputs above all else. Employees matter as individuals and they need to be met where they are, treated respectfully& communicated with openly, it’s about being treated as a human being, not a human ‘resource’.
These are the themes we will be taking at this year’s forum ‘Making Companies a Great place to Work' - more details can be seen below.
As we enter our sixth year, we look forward to a more positive economic outlook for the future and continuing to work with many of these Great Companies to help them achieve their goals.

HR Forum
'Becoming a Great Place to Work'

April 25th 2013

Employee Engagement appears to be the ‘hot topic’ amongst HR people. With little or no growth in the Economy, margins are being squeezed and inflation-busting salary rises seem to be a thing of the past. How do you keep your key talent and make sure they are happy, productive and motivated in their roles without being able to significantly increase their remuneration?
This is the theme for this year’s Searchlight Group Forum which is our annual event targeted at HR Directors and senior managers with HR responsibilities. For any enquiries please email

The annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this year had over 150,000 attendees.
The biggest buzz on the TV manufacturer stands was 4K, or Ultra HD as it is also being referred to. This is the new standard in picture definition being marketed to consumers, which delivers four times the picture quality of HD. Big brands like Sony and LG were showing 84 inch screens that retail at over $20,000. The price of these TVs is expected to fall rapidly but the main problem is the lack of content in native 4K format. The “upscaling” technology built into the sets produces very good picture quality but it will be some time before we see an enhanced Blu-ray format delivering full 4K.
