Lumina's Movers & Shakers Report

After a Golden Month for Team GB, we come back down to earth with the day-to-day business of looking at current moves in our Industry.

The growth of the emerging markets in the Middle East, East. Europe and the Far East continues to be reflected in the high number of international moves featured here, and mirrors to some extent the changing nature of some of our own Searches. We are now proud to announce that Lumina’s work has spanned all the five continents (with the exception of just one!) and this looks set to continue.

Whilst Salford cannot be described as ‘Emerging ‘it is nevertheless a very fast growing and vibrant new Production hub and, as they are a client, we decided to devote some space to them in our Newsletter. I’d like to thank Ian Munford for the visit earlier in August and hopefully this will give you a good insight into what’s going on up there.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with this report, it’s brought to you as a useful service to keep you up to date with the ever-revolving door. Here at Lumina, it’s our business to know who is where - and since we’re collecting this information anyway, we’re happy to share it with you each month, free of charge. Contributions always welcomed.

"Life as an Ex-Pat in an Emerging Market"

By David Brook, 1+1 Media, Ukraine

David Brook Photo
"Life begins at the end of your comfort zone"

I only noticed this quote a couple of days ago on the office wall of Anna Barranik, our very smart Head of HR, but it encapsulates my experience of the first four months in Kiev as Strategic Marketing
Director of 1+1 Media, Ukraine's leading TV group.

The first month was an unusual experience, dealing with a different language and culture. But there were also some positives. I have found many of the producers and executives throughout the company to be as talented as anywhere in the TV world. The Director General and CEO, Aleksander Tkachenko is a creative and charismatic leader.

Under his direction, everyone that I have encountered has been responsive and up for change. I could not fail to appreciate the efforts of the support staff in sorting out apartment, driver, work permit, tax code, interpreter and even Russian language lessons.

During this early period I had to resist the temptation to make immediate judgements or pronouncements. Understanding the local culture and the way in which people communicate and interact with eachother is a prerequisite to progress. As the first British ex-pat to work for this company I felt a strong  sense of responsibility.

A bad or non-productive experience would mean I would probably be the first and the last...

A Walk through MediaCity Studios

Three days after the Olympics Closing Ceremony, MediaCityUK still has a real buzz of excitement. After handling much of the distribution for this major event, with thousands of people regularly gathering in the large open concourse in front of its big screens to cheer on the athletes – the city is getting ready to welcome in the new football season. After a summer long festival of sport covering the production of the Euros and Wimbledon, new productions are starting to move in including a brand new dating show for Channel 4, Question of Sport, a new comedy with John Bishop and of course Match of the day.

Ian Munford is Commercial Director at The Studios (shortly to be re-branded Dock 10) which is at the heart of all the production that goes on in at MediaCityUK. With a total square footage of 190,000sq ft and nine HD studios including one at 13,000sq ft – The Studios will soon be the single largest production and post facility in the UK.

As well as its impressive size, the centre has one of the most advanced technical and communications infrastructures designed specifically to support digital production and distribution. With services such as cloud editing and media storage the campus feels like a thriving digital production hub. The array of connectivity options mean customers can reach over 600 media distribution locations around the world and over 500 media companies in the UK.
