Dear Walla Walla University parent,

By now you may be aware that on Monday, December 9, Walla Walla University discovered that we had been targeted by a ransomware incident. The timing of this incident was challenging as our students were just about to take their final tests and complete our fall academic quarter.

Immediately upon discovery of the incident, our teams began to work in two directions:

  • First, we launched an investigation with the assistance of a leading cyber forensic firm and contacted law enforcement. As part of this process we began work to bring our affected systems back online as quickly as possible.
  • Second, we worked to ensure our employees’ and students’ access was restored to email, D2L (our online teaching and learning software) and OneDrive storage. These were prioritized to give students and their professors access to assignments and tests, and to facilitate campus communications during the investigation.
I am proud of how our students, faculty and staff pulled together to complete the quarter as scheduled. I am particularly grateful for the nearly round-the-clock efforts of our Information Technology Department. These staff members and student employees worked quickly to identify system issues and re-establish communications.

Most of our students are away from our campuses on holiday break, but the investigation and reinstatement processes continue. Your student should now be able to access their email, which will be a primary tool for communications as we bring critical systems back up before our winter quarter starts on January 6.

We understand the importance of protecting the information of students, parents, employees, alumni and donors. As we work to complete the investigation of this incident, we will also look for opportunities to further enhance our existing security measures.
