The 1961 Cuban Literacy Campaign: Transforming Cuban Women & Society
Thursday, April 7th, 7pm
Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts
2868 Mission Street, San Francisco
$10 General Adm. / $8 students, youth, & seniors
The 1961 Cuban Literacy Campaign dramatically improved Cuban literacy by organizing over 100,000 volunteers – over half of who were women – to teach classes in the country's rural areas. In less than a year, more than 700,000 Cubans learned to read and write. The national literacy rate increased from 65% to 96%, making the campaign one of the most successful in the history of Latin America. Cuba’s model of achieving literacy is currently being adopted in over 50 nations.
"Maestra" is a 30-minute video documentary that shares the stories of Cuban women literacy workers who traveled to the mountains and valleys across the island to teach—and who found themselves deeply transformed in the process. The evening will feature a discussion with Catherine Murphy, Director/Producer, and Professor Norma Guillard from Cuba, one of the original teachers from the campaign featured in the film.
Co-sponsored by U.S. Women & Cuba Collaboration, The Literacy Project, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, Center for Poltical Education, the Christopher R. Reynolds Foundation and Marazul Charters.
