New Gateway Treatments!
If you’ve visited 1st Ave NW, between NW 73rd St and NW 79Th St, you probably noticed the upgraded Healthy Street signs located at each intersection. The new installation is using concrete blocks to hold the signs instead of the orange barrels. In response to our call for residents to maintain planters which would replace the cement blocks in select locations, we received interest from eight neighbors! We will be working with these individuals in the coming months to swap out the cement blocks with planters and add some color just in time for spring!

Traffic Calming Coming Soon
We recently installed temporary traffic calming features along NW 73rd St (between Palatine Ave N and 3rd Ave NW) and after further evaluation we are modifying the design and installing an all way stop at the southern terminus of the Healthy Street as well as asphalt and painted curb bulbs to slow speeds and reduce vehicle volumes. New speed humps will also be installed on NW 79th.
Greenwood Healthy Street Phase 2
Now that the gateway treatments for Phase 1 (from NW 73rd St to NW 79th St) are nearing completion, we are gearing up for the permanent upgrades to the gateways at the intersections from NW 79th St to NW 100th St. These are anticipated in Summer of 2022. Along with these, we will work with community members to identify areas with safety or comfort concerns as well as opportunities to enhance the experience for users. Please email us with your concerns and ideas at GreenwoodStayHealthyStreet@Seattle.gov
Transition From Temporary to Permanent
Based on the finding of the evaluation of the Greenwood Stay Healthy Street, including the increases in walkers, bikers, and rollers, reduction in vehicles, and overwhelming community support (over 80% in support!) via the Stay Healthy Streets Survey, the Greenwood Healthy Street on 1st Ave Northwest is in the process of receiving upgrades to become permanent. The upgrades include intersection gateways with cement blocks, planter boxes, painted curb bulbs, and speed humps to slow cross traffic.
The Seattle Department of Transportation will be conducting community outreach as the project unfolds to inform neighbors of the upcoming changes.
We are committed to providing updates on this project and will share new information as we have it. You can share this link with others to sign up for our project email list. (check the box for Greenwood / 1st Ave NW).
